Halinski 1:200 HMS Hood Build

Argh!! I worked on the bridge superstructure and the upper portion looks like garbage IMHO. The fit was pretty lousy. At least the mast fit through it nicely. I enlarged the holes on the way up so I had a fighting chance with that at least. Oh well.... I am soon on my way to working the boats and the turrets..... Payoff....

That is some excellent horrible fit - must have been the craftsmanship making up for it :)

I'm going to cut off the top of the structure to make it a platform like it is supposed to. It's funny how some companies interpret a structure completely erroniously. I should of checked this before installation, but I am short on time being on 12 hour shifts, so I wanted to get it done.

ehm, id like to ask, if anyone has perhaps built or know a report a 9/93 version of hood? I think this one that SKi is building, is the Nr 3 version or?

9/93 should be newer, printed on glossy paper,the Nr3 on halfglossy. is this true? Im asking because i have the oppertunity to buy both models, and i can't decide, which one...the nr3 is full of mistakes, but is printed not on full gloss paper, but the 9/93 is full glossy, and so heavier to produce proper parts by myself...what do you recommend me?
 
My version is the earlier No. 3 model. It's got a fair share of mistakes, but none that will be a show stopper. However, I would recommend you get the 1993 model as I'm sure it is a vast improvement over mine. I took mine to a copy place and I'm happy I did. The card stock is thin to say the least and not ideal for building the model. Add the fact that the instructions for the earlier model will NOT be enough to build the kit. It's just too lacking in any sort of detail. I was lucky I had additional sources to help me out....

but im afraid, because the 93 version is printed on glossy paper, and so the ability to produce parts that are wrong is useless...because of the paper type...as i've heard the nr3 isnt glossy, or at least is half glossy. or is it? dont know for sure... but ive heard that the 93 is just a reprint without corrections, but i cant compare the designs, usually i try to download the 'pirate version' to review all possible versions, before i buy any, but i cant find sources for this one:(

It was an off day when this was produced it's a pig to build trouble is when you have done it, then it's impressive. My advice mate copy the lot at least that way you can mess about until you are happy. You also need to look through your kits for a decent uploader and pom pom

sure mate, seen the poor detailing yes. anyway i bought the king george v a year ago, and that one is extreme detailed, it should help.. anyways, i've also found the warspite with camouflage coloring (newer edition) for a decent price..i think i'll take it too :)

Great thread on the build of the "monster"....Your progress is terrific, and you are doing a GREAT job!:thumb: I expect that there are a lot of errors in the kits I have been building latelywall1, since most of them are old and of rather poor quality:curse:. given the timeframe and the technology that exhisted in those days...I have had to redesign the 5" guns and the 25mm AA guns that were given with this current old GPN "Hiryu" kit...since those included were just to simple and lacking in detail...the whole thing had to be recolored...and If parts did not fit to my liking...I just redesigned them....this is all frustating at times....but the finished product that I can imagine, fuels my efforts...you are doing a great job!, and the trouble that you have to endure in the construction, just makes the finished product all the "sweeter"8-)...since you know what you had to go through to get it!!!balloon6...Keep up the great work!

I didn't know that the 93 version wasn't a revision. Interesting. I would say that the No. 3 version is half-gloss at most. It is really thin stuff compared to what I am used to using. That makes me nervous as it would be prone to warping, and that is bad.....very bad.

Thanks for your comments airbob! I am having a ton of fun with this kit. Figuring out everything and modifying the ship to fix a mistake or adding detail that was missing is all part of the fun. It's great when you can out-smart a flawed kit. :twisted:

Hey folks!


I modded the top of the superstructure by cutting off the top of the "box" and added a lip around the top of the deck. I will paint the interior later. It looks a lot better! I painted and installed the mast as well as added the panel that was missing from each side of the bridge wing front.

I am really happy with how the ship is turning out. I ordered quite a bit of laster-cut railings as well..... I really need to get started on the ship's boats now before I decide to throw them away :twisted:....

I haven't installed the funnels yet. I want to leave them off to make it easier to work on the boat. I have now dumped them off the ship at least 10 times forgetting that they aren't glued on yet. My wife gets a laugh out of it every time.....

You look enjoying model building modifying to your heart's content. That is one way of enjoying modeling.

I haven't made much headway this week. I did start building up the ship's boats, but that's about it. I recieved my laser-cut railings yesterday and was playing around with it this morning. I tried taking it off the sprue and painting it, I also painted it on the sprue, which doesn't work! So, I think I will stick with applying the railing and painting it afterwards. I'm not sold on using this stuff for the railings along the edge of the main deck as it is REALLY flimsy. It's made of paper, of course. However, it works well on other applications. I suppose as I get more comfortable with it, it will improve. I just cringe at the though of somebody grabbing the ship and crushing the railings.....:curse: I really like how the railings improve the look of the ship!!

I also just recently bought laser-cut railings and had same experience you are going through. The railings I bought had four horizontal bars. Finally I painted it before cutting off from sprue then leave it one day until paint completely drys. Then cut off from sprue but left bottom side bar I mean fourth bar and glued fourth bar on deck. After applied some of railings I stopped moving on further hoping to find some thread like this describing how to do it.
Attached picture shows railings I did. The bottom railings does not seem to stand out but.....
