Anyone know of a freebie or something that comes close to looking like this? I have built the JSC model (nice indeed) but I need something of greater simplicity for a middle school student.

Many thanks! Basic indeed, but perfect for a 13-year old's school project.
Google Roman Seas.
It floats! I'm trying to make an r/c mechanism to make the oars go.
I'd been looking for a Greek ship and your tip might provide the basis to start a mod off the boat!
Much thanks!

I may have just the thing for you in that regard. I have a plastic kit made in Korea for a Kobuksan, which is Korean for Turtle Boat. It's the first ironclad, 350 years before the Monitor & Merrimac.
It has a motor driven unit that drives a set of oars. In fact, it not only moves the oars back and forth, but they lift and rotate. I have no desire to sell the model, but I could get dimensions and pics for you so that you could replicate the mechanism. It's really quite clever.[/quote
I'd love to see pictures, dimensions wouldn't help that much, as I'd have to resize everything anyway.
My first problem was suitable bearing surfaces. I have solved that with model train pieces. Now it is just a matter of machining parts and drilling some holes in precisely the right place. I have purchased a drill press, I just have a lot of precision drilling and tapping to do. My design will use a seperate motor for the starboard an port oar banks, so I can control them seperately. which should be fun.
