The best source for rail yard photos is North American Railyards by Michael Rhodes. It is basically 240 pages of yard photos and a great resource for designing model yards.
 
Brian, thanks for the lead and while this is not my thread I can put this intel to good use in designing a modern era local yard.

Hump Yard Photos

I agree with Brian about the book. I bought a copy as soon as I saw it.
Here's a pic of the hump I took at UP's West Colton. The "crest" of the hump, where the cars are released, is ahead of the train, adjacent the small structure and group of trees near the center of the pic.
I've also attached a photo of one of the retarders ahead of the hump. My assumption is that these retarders aid the locomotives in braking the train, as the approach to the hump is slightly downgrade.
