Free Model #4 Optimus Prime

Hello All,

I've decided to enter the free model contest this time with V5's Optimus Prime. I didn't have too much time to work on it as a Beta and V5 has already released it for download so I have started over on the build (never finished the body any way :P ).

I plan on doing mods like adding some posability and details. I built the front grill with vents instead of printed ones. The grill was painted and I've decided that much of the model will most likely be painted to. I've also added another section to the front of the lower body which will in turn force me to paint all parts light gray to match :P

I've added a waist joint to seen in the pictures. Got a little sloppy on the glue for the peg on the waist as I misaligned on the 1st try :P I plan on making the arms and head posable but I'm still debating on if I'll do the legs or not.

Are you working on the reduced size version instead of full 45cm size?
Your skill is impressive. I will be closely watching your work as basis of building mine.
I have started with the head and I hope to post some pictures soon.

I set the PDF to print 2 pages per sheet so basically it's 50%. I tend to do that with a lot of models. It saves ink, cardstock, and display space. Not to meantion quite a few models coming out lately are designed large enough that building at 50% is quite easily done :D That's what I did for Rob's Alex Gundam and I've printed off Skip's Bumble Bee Camaro at 50% as well. Hope to see some pics of yours.

Thanks a bunch Getter1. This is way cool. Damn If I can't get this Bumblebee done so I can work on some more of these great T-former models! I need like 26 hrs in a day! I don't know how all you guys get these builds done so fast. Maybe my 3 kids have something to do with it? lol. I will follow your build with interest!

Don't go rushing BB ;) your build is looking great. I want to do that one as well but I have to clear up quite a few projects before tackiling such a complex build :P

I'm lovin all the Transformers coming out lately so designers keep em coming.

Well I don't have childern but I can imagine that they can limit your modeling time. My "kids" can be put back into their cages when they aren't behaving :P

For the build I'm nearly done with the waist and should have pics up later on tonight.

Can't wait to see your progress Getter1. I am starting with the head :oops:.
Not easy and already got stumped on the back side of the head, like where do 22-25 pieces suppose to get attached? wall1. .. Also the mouth piece.....wall1 Hopefully voltron5 and Getter1 can help me with the direction.
For my modification on simple movement of head, arm, hand, and waist, I have decided to use the same mechanism that Japan mazinger kit have used which I think is pretty simple and clever.

I have attached the picture below for refrence and possible use.

I appreciate it! I have decided to stop where I was on the left foot and start the right foot to build both legs in tandem like I did the arms. There is much benefit to this when it comes to getting them to look identical. This is especially important for the legs I think as he would look a bit silly standing with a "lean" and a cane! I have some cool ideas for Optimus as I think this will be the first build I plan on doing some mods to. Should be interesting.

Randy, thanks for the plans on the moveable neck. I think I will use that as well (or something similar).
 
Here is a shot of the back of the head from my beta-build. In the picture one side is missing from the back because that part was flipped in my beta-build, it was fixed for the release though. If you have any questions let me know, I'll be glad to help.

Hey voltron5, thank you very much for the pictures which solves my mystery nicely :thumb:

This is really nothing, but one of ear antennas should also be flipped because both are printed facing same direction. Hope to provide some build pics soon. I am totally enjoying building this.

Yeah building limbs tandem is a good idea. I've done the lopsided bit a few times myself :P Oh and be careful, once you start modding you'll find that you can very rerely build anything without mods anymore :P

I'm glad V5 jumped in because I have a standard build pattern for most all robots,

1) Body
2) Legs and feet
3) Arms and hands
4) Head
5) weapons and Equipment

Since I'm wrapping up the body now I'm quite a ways from the head :P

I have that Mazinger model myself :D But I think I will be doing something quite diffrent on the joints. I'll post more on that if they work :P

Sorry I didn't get update pics up last night. I had to re-do the front waist yellow parts as I didn't like how the paper I used turned out.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing. I got the bug from laminating pieces on Bumblebee. It really adds a lot of dimension to very simple parts. Of course I plan on doing more than laminating, but it's a good start. I will post a thread when I get to the build!
 
Ok here's an update.

I've more or less finished the lower body. The upper body still needs a few detail parts and I may re-visit both later to add more details, but here it is ATM.

Note the lower body is completly painted. The gray and yellow parts are seperate card parts to add raised detail. The Yellow parts were also re-shaped a bit. Also the upper body stripe is silver paint. I'm debating on if I want to go ahead and paint the red over to or not?

I've started on of the legs and have done a few sketches on joint work ideas now to put the therories to practice :P

Prime's progress got a little slow as I'm trying to finish up Voltron at the same time. Just have to finish up the Blue Lion :D

Wow, Getter1 that is simply amazing work you are doing.
