Finally!My DM&IR Yellowstone has arrived!

Well,I finally got my hands on an DM&IR Yellowstone.It was made by Samhongsa of Korea and imported by Westside Models and is it a beauty.It has great detail,not quite as good as the one Samhongsa did for PSC,but pretty darn close.It also comes with a DM&IR "G" Class Caboose which is pretty cool.I tried to run it and it doesn't run real well yet and there's some tarnish,but both problems should be solved when I send it out to be painted and to have DCC,Loksound and directional lighting installed.Enough chit-chat,here's some pics....

Hope you enjoy the pictures,I'm sure Kevinkrey will at least.I'm really excited to have this engine and will be sure to post pictures after it gets painted,there will be a loooong 4-5 week turn around for that.

I'm not a big steam fan either...but that is a great looking steam engine and deserves praise. That's really going to look great painted up! Terrific detaling.

I'm disappointed in how it runs,when I give it juice the Can Motor "whirs",but it barely moves and when it does it is very "clunky".This is my first brass engine so I'm hoping this is the case with brass engines that have sat for a long period of time and need a good cleaning and lubrication.I'm also hoping when I send it out for the painting and DCC installation that this problem will be solved.

I was actually looking out for an Akane version,but when this showed up on ebay I nabbed it.You just don't see them on ebay,or anywhere else for that matter,for sale very often.Even the Akanes are getting hard to find,although there is one on ebay right now,but the price is a bit steep otherwise I might get that one also.

Chris, I just got home from school and turned on my computer,:eek::eek::eek::eek: announce1WOW is all there is too it, SHES A REAL BEAUT!!!!!!!!!

There is no way I can compete with you in the DMIR equipment list, yea I might have more ore cars (I think, never seen any of yours) but that one really blows the top off any competitive fun I could have had with you!

I guess this is something that I could congradulate you on?:confused:
 
A lot of brass steam usea a plastic type tube for the driveline, and when it gets old it dries up and takes a set if left without moving for a long period of time. Replacing the tube solves thiat problem. Have you looked at the drive yet?

I agree that that is a very nice looking engine. I've always loved the brass engines and posted a pic of mine on here some time ago (painted).
The electrical condition of the engine concerns me though. With DCC, most installers will tell you, make sure it runs really good first, and then convert it over to DCC... not the other way around. I fear you will be compounding your problems. Unless you are going to add a new gear tower and motor, I'd make sure I got her runnin' cherry like before I tried converting her. In my humble opinion...
PM woodone for a second opinion on that if he does not chime in here. He does a lot of that stuff and I would value his opinion.

I'm actually sending it out to be professionly painted and converted to DCC so I'm sure they'll know what to do.As tetters mentioned in his post,there is no way I'm doing anything with this engine on my own.

The motor is fine,it just won't move now and I think what Gary said in his post makes a lot of sense to me.if so it's a minor problem that will be easy to fix.

Thanks Kevin,but I didn't post the pictures to make anybody feel bad about what they do or don't have.I'm just excited for myself because I've always wanted and now I finally do.Besides,minus the Yellowstone your collection stacks up nicely to mine and you have to remember I'm quite a bit older then you so I'm guessing that by the time your my age you'll have AT LEAST one Yellowstone on your roster.I actually don't have any ore cars yet and you've seen all I have for the DM&IR as far as rolling stock goes.Of course I'll have to get a couple sets of Walthers ore cars to run behind the Yellowstone,nothing else would work or look right.

It's really cool that there is someone else on The Gauge who is into the DM&IR as much as I am and the most important thing is to have fun,not worrying about what the other guy has.

Those yellowstones were impressive hunks of steel. That's a great-looking model!

As for the drive problems... I hope it is something simple like a driveline problem. Worst case would be siderod interference or a driver out of quarter. With the articulated, there may be a a second driveline between the first and second sets of drivers.

Here's what happened when I tested it earlier today.The motor would rev up,stop,rev up again and with a little push would move a small amount,but very noisily and clunky.After doing this a couple times I couldn't get it to move anymore,but the motor runs great with a nice continuous whirring sound.

The place I'm sending it to is a large brass retailer in Canada,they do repairs,re-motors and have a guy that picks up engines every once in a while to paint them.When I talked to the guy he said he was very good at painting brass steam and he's all they use for that.I'm going to call them to let them know what's going on so they know and there aren't any surprises.

Gary is right: make sure that they are qualified to do repair work and that they guarantee their work. If the loco isn't repaired completely before painting, any money spent will be wasted. Some repairs are very straightforward, while others can require several disassemblies and re-assemblies to track down stubborn problems. This is very rough on paint jobs. The loco should run flawlessly before painting and flawlessly after, too. You should also make arrangements so that the added cost of repairs doesn't come as a shock in the event that major work is required - at least have them let you know the added costs before you give them the okay to go ahead.

I mentioned in my last post that I was going to give them a call to make sure there are no "surprises".I will also ask them if they are qualified to do the repair and if they will guarantee their work,I don't want any problems with this engine.I was finally able to afford one and they're not easy to come by,I'm even nervous to ship it anywhere to be honest.

I am almost positive the drive train needs to be replaced,it doesn't move at all yet the motor is running nicely.I don't think I mentioned this before,but it has a huge Canon can motor in it.I wonder if it's a "coasting" drive that Samhongsa used for their better models.

Well,after talking to some people chances are that either the drive line needs to replaced or the gears are seized up.Anybody on The Gauge qualified for such repairs?

Ah great!Both of the other halves of the gear covers have fallen into the boiler!Looks like I have no choice but to open 'er up now! And both gears move freely now also.

More progress.....

Looks like it is the little piece of tubing,when I twist it by hand the gears inside the gear boxes move smoothly.The tubing was barely connected to the motor and eventually came off the motor hence the "clunking" then "whirring" of the motor running unconnected to the gears...I think?

Thanks for the help Wayne!Now I just have to lube it up and put it back together,any suggestions on what to use?
