Enough of planning already!!!!

Yes, I agree that the trouble to re-use would outway the cost of new.
Not that I am going to have to tear em' up because I am going to lay
everything perfect the first time! :rolleyes:

I also agree that you have to have something on the drawing table at
all times but to adjust in real life is more than appropriate!

I totaly aggree with needing a plan of some sort. But as I found out, last night, a good plan is more of a guidline. I spent many hours over the last week playing with different designs in RTS. Well I decided yesterday it was time to do some hands on work. So I tore up my old yard and started laying out the new one. I was going off of the plan I came up with in RTS. I quickly found out that it fit alot differently on the table then it did on the computer, and in a good way. I had alot more room then I thought. So I was able to add 2 more spurs and a run around track. So i will continue to play with ideas on the software and keep a "guidline" plan in sight, but I agree that it is best to just "Get er done".

Keep up the good work everyone, and just have fun.

This was the case I was trying to make all along.
I came home for lunch today and of course spent
a few minutes in the train room. :rolleyes:
I pulled out my latest plan that I am going with and
I found out something.
I started placing a few buildings around just to get the feel
of how I have them placed and found that I have a lot more
room in almost all areas.:D
Enough to run a couple more spurs or maybe another run
of main line track! :cool:
I may or may not do this, maybe just add more landscape
but the bad part is that I already outlined my roadbed runs
with permanent marker!:cry:

Oh, No, I did not say that!
Now the rath will begin again! ;)

I think the place a section and run the train plan may be the best! :D

Russel don't worry about the marker You'll probably consider painting the benchwork an earth color anyway before laying track ( hint hint ) and not do like I did which is not paint the new plywood first. Its amazing when you start moving structures around how things start to pop out at you.
Russel is there any chance of seeing your plan?:)

I will have to try something different to upload the plan.
I'm using this Rail Cad and am having problems converting
to jpg, ect.
I am on the road all day so will have to try again tonight.

I've only been doing this since like, uh, well okay its time to lay some track!
I am experimenting with all purpose chaulk tonight. it is easy to work with
but a little messy. I, Lynn, set the first bumpers to my layout tonight and then,
my 15 yo son had to show me something!

Well anyway, I do have 2-bumpers set and the rest is going to fly.:thumb:
I like this chaulk process. It is easy to lay roadbed and track with and
almost as easy as to tear up. Not that I will have to do that for gosh sakes.
When the kid gets done with the camera and I set another several feet
I will show you some track. So there~:D
And yes Interurban, every track has a start, mine has just taken longer
the connecting the East to the West.

Hey Russ,

I see you also are a WI resident. I lived in Madison for 10 years a looooong time ago, but only got the chance to go out your way a couple of times. Nice country out there.

About that closet...I was renting back then, and although I tried to restore it as best I could when I moved out, I'm sure the landlord didn't much appreciate the backdrop painted on the back wall!!!

This part of Gods Country is special and few people realise its here.
A very well kept secret but one I'm afraid that is growing more well-known.
I also have or had relatives in San Antonio. Nice place to visit.

If thats flex track your using before you know it u'll have to start cutting in turnouts :wave:Oh yes and what ever you do don't solder yet till you have it allin place I find the thumb tacks are real handy . I get it all down held by thumb tacks then when it looks like it'll work I then start with the nails . And actually this layout I didn't even glue any of the roadbed down the track is doing all the work .

I decided from this point on not to glue the roadbed down either. I just used a few nails to hold it in place and to the shape I wanted, and nailed the track down on top of it. It is all held in place pretty well, and I figured once I ballast, the ballast and glue will hold everything together. The added benefit is, if you need to move anything before you ballast it will all come up easy and be reusable.
 
I learned that lesson from last layout :oops: now the only place nail went were thru the ties and on the edges of the roadbed to hold it in place on the curves:thumb:
 
Glad to see progress, but also glad to shoot the breeze about 'what ifs' and 'somedays'. It's part of the hobby too, in a way.

A couple more thoughts on planning/building/modifying.

John Allen was the consumate planner and saw planning as a part of the hobby unto itself. Yet even his plans got changed once he began building. Check out the G&D yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gandd) and look at all the great new photos being scanned in by the current owner of 9 Cielo Vista Terrace, apparantly left there after the fire that destroyed most of the great Gorre & Daphetid. You'll see how his plans changed with time, yet also his strong emphasis on planning well the first time to make the best start the first time. The original layout was so well planned it made it into the second and final incarnations of the G&D.

And on a personal note, I may have mentioned this elsewhere, but I started out with an oval on a sheet of ply in HO. However, some of the most creative times I spent with trains were on the laundry room floor at my friend's house with a box of old sectional track, a couple-three tyco power packs and some wire. Great times learning about why horn-hooks just don't work well most of the time (unless you run 'em really fast), how to clean wheels & rail, why nickel silver is better than brass, etc.

But now I'm just itchin' to build something, rolling stock, a structure, anything, since it's all boxed up still...so keep up the good work! I'm modeling vicariously through you as I suspect many others are also!
