Tom:wave:, THANKS!!!, for the GREAT PIC!!:thumb: :D . your help has brought a problem with my engine though:( , looks like #833 did not have duel beacons, like others in the 800 series, OH WELL, looks like the crew here on the "Rock Valley Sub" have upgraded it;)tooth1. heres a couple more pics of some of UP's 800 series engines:D . Hi Deano,

The UP 1260 is a SW10, the SW10's are rebuilts of SW7's, SW9's and TR5A's. They were rebuilt at Omaha shops between 1979 and 1984 using parts from scrapped GP7 and GP9. There is a how to in Diesel Modeler's Guide Part 1, pages 93 to 95 . Looks not that difficult if you use screens from Smokey Valley and matching fans and an Athearn or LL P2K switcher. I can e-mail you more information if you want to kitbash one.

Definitely, use a switcher as a helper. I have photos (sorry, no scanner to allow me to post them) of the prototype TH&B running an SW-7, as a helper, on the headend of a long freight up the Niagara Escarpment. The road power was TH&B and either PRR (Penn Central) or Conrail geeps. At the top of the grade, there was a passing siding where the switcher was cut off. I chased this train from Kinnear Yard, in Hamilton, to the top of the grade at Vinemount, thinking that this was a once a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get photos of such a move, but I later learned that this was a fairly common practice.

Nice work on your switcher, Dean. As you say, I wouldn't worry too much about the dual beacons: locomotives are always being upgrade, repaired, or modified. The prototype might have had dual beacons at one time, or it may get them at some time in the near future.

Can anyone tell me when GP40-2's were being used as head-end equipment? More specifically with BN?

Deano, I'm not too worried about being prototypical, so just wondering here, how much would an MP15 like yours and your dads run me, with no dcc or sound?

Wayne, THANK YOU!, for the kind words:D . i also found your story on switchers being helpers quite interesting:thumb: , THANKS!:D ** Tobias, THANKS!!, for the info on those UP switchers:thumb: , all the train shows are coming up starting at the end of this month, now i will look for an SW-7 or SW-9:thumb::D . ** viperman, Atlas makes the MP15DC's, and Athearn makes MP15AC's, BOTH look identical, i have seen both brands of them without DCC or sound for between $139.00 - $98.00, but i STRONGLY SUGGEST waiting for a show, i bet you'll find them for around $75 - $85 at a show;) . sadly, NEITHER brand makes them as a BN:( , perhaps their is another road you would like that they make them in:) . If I remember correctly, the gp40-2 came out in 1972. I think it would not be out of place to see them used as head end power up to 1980 at least. If they are like the Santa Fe, and now BNSF the requirement for head end power is that it is available when it is needed.
 
I only have 18" curves, so I can't run a Dash 9, SD40, or anything big like that. I want to model modern, but like I've said, the GP is my only loco

how about a Dash 8-40b? that would be more modern, and i know they will take 18r curves:thumb: . just a thought.:D -Deano
 
Engine #4 Finished

OK folks, i am in the process of working on a couple hard engines, doing a layout tour, and working on a couple other projects for this thread;):D. but to keep things going, i am going to post two engines that took very little to finish:thumb: . NOT ALL engines i have are "big projects", some of the engines are near "perfect" right out of the box, and require little work to satisfy me:thumb: . the next two engines i will post are good examples of this. the first is an ES44AC, its a model by TOWER 55 with Digitrax sound. this model came right out of the box about PERFECT:thumb:(what did you expect, its a Tower 55;) ). all i have done to this model is detail the hoses, and weather the lower half. **announce1 FIRST, just a note, some of you might be wondering, Deano, why do you take so many pics of your stuff at the grade crossing?:confused: WELL, think about this, most of our FIRST experiences with trains came from where?...THE GRADE CROSSING:thumb: . to this day, i still find excitement in the hopes that i will be stuck waiting for a train to go by:thumb::D. to put it simply, i just think its one of the neatest spots to see a train:D . announce1 OK, BACK TO OUR REGULAR SCHEDULED PROGRAM. Here is an Athearn RTR, boy has Athearn come a LONG way!:thumb: the Athearn RTR's really look GREAT!, the detailing is well done on them, and they run good too:thumb: . this model is an AC4400, didn't have to do much to this one. i installed an MRC Brillance sound decoder in it, put sun shades on it, and weathered the lower half:thumb: . 1st pic is out of the box, except for the sunshades i added on it, 2nd pic is the proto, last pic is the engine finished to my liking.:D -Deano View attachment 29578 View attachment 29579 View attachment 29580

Arg, double post

Josh, I just may look into getting one, BNSF is cool too, would look really good together with my BN GP. Now I just have to convert that one SF dummy engine I have to kadee couplers, and I've got it all!
