I think that a SD40-3 is an after market rebuild/upgrade of a SD40-2
maybe someone more knowldegeable will be able to tell you more???

what would this one be? it's says it's an SD40-3 but I think this looks more like an SD40.

Chris, the one you have pictured is a tunnel motor, an SD40T-2.
The CN SD40's listed in the bottom picture has a larger porch than a standard SD40. They have the "Ears" behind the cabs, for snow reasons, if I'm correct.

CRed, the engine you posted is REALLY a SD45-T2:thumb:.
Art, the engine on the point you posted is a plain SD40, lack of the water sight glass says its NOT an SD40-2. the overhang behind the cab is common on Canadian engines, though i don't know what it is

On their roster they are listed as SD40-3's and they use SD45-T2 bodies so I read it wrong,sorry about that.

Athearn has a RTR model of the SD40-3,but they call them SD45-T2/Early which isn't exactly correct.I wouldn't mind getting one and detailing it and adding DCC and sound to it.

Chris, i have two of Athearns SD45-T2's, one patched SP, one UP. i have put MRC Brilliance decoders in BOTH, and they run & sound GREAT!:thumb: i didn't check if DM&IR had any SD40-T2's, but i have a patched SP one of those too(with Brilliance sound in it), its an Athearn BB. -Deano

I believe a -3 designation means a microprocessor refit. SD40-3s have been rebuilt from SD40s, SD40-2s, SD45s, SD45T-2s and maybe other models. I don't know any way to identify the -3 versions.

Cool,I am thinking of putting one in my BN Kato SD70Mac.I don't really want to spend alot of money on one and if the MRC is good enough for you it should be good enough for me.
Question though,what are the two loose wire for?Are they grounds or something?

Strange,the one I saw on E-Bay shows two loose wires coming from the decoder.Would it be too much trouble to get the part number of the ones you use?I just want to get the right one so if you could I'd greatly appreciate it.

Chris, the "older" MRC brilliance sound decoders had the two "extra" wires, as i mentioned before, they are for lighting effects. you can seal the ends to keep from getting a short, if you get one of those. the NEW MRC Brilliance decoders have all the wires included in the plug, and are MUCH SMALLER, making them A LOT EASIER to install as they require less room:thumb:. for an SD70MAC I recommend getting MRC Brilliance #0001638 EMD modern large diesel sound decoder:thumb:.
