DIY ballast for 00 gauge?

Hi guys,

I'm starting to build up my little GWR 0-4-0 branch line but I need something to use as track ballast. Hornby have this great sponge one, but it's very hard to get hold of in South Africa, and I don't want to donate any organs to pay for it.

So, please, any suggestions/techniques to create a realistic ballast would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if the scale would be right for you or not, but I have used plain clay cat litter on many occasions for different rock effects and the results have been superb ( just as long as you don't want black ballast!)
