Diesel, Steam, or Electric? (or Other???)

lol, i knew steam and diesle would be high, but i expected more electrics. Has everyone forgotten the GG1s? the EP5s?

Over the last 26 years I have modeled steam / diesel And electric.
I love em all.
I prefer electric,Interurbans heavy juicers now, but include the steam / diesels in a smaller capacity .

Desiel is a bad word in my house sign1 I only run steam & honorrary steam on my tracks (NKP Bluebirds)

That being said, I love that this is a hobby in which people can readily find products to model all eras (1830's from bachmann...1850s from mantua...1860-90s from Bachmann/MDC...1890-1920 from MDC...1920+ from many manufacturers). I can certainly appreciate what modern desiel modellers do, and I don't think that my choices are in any way better than theirs...mine are only better for me.
I can really understand the first hand experience thing. I grew up around a railroad historical society so I have seen many a people convert to steam...actually, it seems that the majority convert to steam fanatics once they've experienced mainline steam...typically they enjoy all forms of power and some still prefer desiels. In my experiences locally with railfans, the modern fans typically do not know very much about steam primarily because their interest stems from train watching and don't have too many steam engines to watch regularly :thumb: Generally I've found them curious about steam, but not curious enough to investigate. (how many american's model or follow foreign railroads?) Nothing vitalizes local railfans like a mainline steam engine coming to town...it's easy to understand why the engineers of the 20th Century Limited were given endorsement status like that of modern athletes and movie stars.
I do like the juice though too. I would like to join a club with some juice at some point...it certainly is interesting. I really enjoy Milwaukee Road and Virginian electrics...as well as Swiss electrics.

wow, there have been alot of spammers in this thread. you'd think you'd be able to lokc them out.
It's a problem with a lot of vBulletin based forums lately. One music forum I used to moderate on was averaging five or six a day for awhile. Using e-mail confirmation before they could post fixed some of that but then a few got smart and started using real e-mails. Our banned list read like a New York phonebook.green_elite_cab said:

A vast majority of it is just scams to gather personal information for identity theft or porn sites which have few if any scruples in the first place. I don't recall ever seeing a ligit piece of spam. It's a rather lucrative business. You would be suprised how many people fall for it.green_elite_cab said:

Bah, nothing says "Art Deco" like the Pennsylvania's electric GG1's. Raymond Loewy's Art Deco designs at its finest!

Definitely steam, though I have a few early deisels as well. It's frustrating that oz for oz, diesels track better and pull better - just like the real thing (minus the smoke and track damage...)
I voted "steam" but my situation & reasons are a little complicated (or longwinded!).
First, my main focus is on my British layout that generally depicts the 1950s-1960s. Steam was very common in Britain then. I think British steam locos are still popular in Britain today partly because they have so many fully-operating steam heritage railways. The fact that they have scores of steam locos from the 1930s-1960s makes steam still familiar to young people who grew up in the 1970/80s and later. I think this is why you generally see more models of British steam locos than you do of North American ones.
Second, although I like diesels and do have a few (North American) ones, steam locos are just so much better! Both in real life and in their model counterparts, diesels just don't do it for me. There's nothing like a steam engine!
