Diesel I.D. Question

Can anyone identify this loco, i.e. what type it's a model of?

I inherited this model from my Dad and I believe it's made by IHC. Being more of a British train enthusiast, I'm not too up on North American diesels.

Just wondering if CN or CP would have run the same type of loco and in what time period (I'm guessing the 1960s-70s).

It runs well but obviously needs some repair to its body. I'm thinking of repainting it in CN or CP colours.

MY guess...a close resemblance to a GP7 Phase 1 without dynamic brakes:winki: . :mrgreen: -Deano
 
That looks like it must be an IHC/Mehano GP-18:

A CNR or CPR GP-9 locomotive looks a little different mainly because of the large fan in the center of the long hood. This is called a "Dynamic Brake" fan.

Comparing your loco with mine I would say it is either late phase GP-9 or a GP-18 (They look a lot alike)

The fact that it does not have dynamic brakes precludes it's use as a CP or CN loco I think.Personally If I wanted to keep and use it I would go ahead and paint it into the scheme I wanted:mrgreen: .After all it is YOUR railway.

But then you could also offer it to Deano as it is a Union Pacific loco. :eek:

[EDIT] i find it interesting that they would state that all GP 18s had dynamic brakes (they didn't) then makle the non- dynamic version.I have several Mehano HO locos and the diesels do not run half bad,but their steam is just simply AWESOME.

I would've guessed GP18, as both the GP7 and -9 have two 36" fans behind the cab and two 36" radiator fans at the rear of the long hood. However, I was under the impression that the GP-18 still used the two 36" fans near the cab, but a single 48" for the radiators. Your model appears to have two single 36" fans. Then again, I model mostly steam, so you shouldn't pay too much attention to what I say. :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

If you want to do it in CP or CN, just install the dynamic brake unit. If you can't get a scale width unit, you could cut one off the Athearn Gp7 shell, and then cut and fill between the "blisters" on both sides and the fan to make it fit.

John,The late (phase III) GP9 share the same carbody as the GP18..THE GP9 had the 567C prime mover and was rated at 1750 hp.
The GP18 had the 567D1 prime mover rated at 1800 hp.

That looks looks like the old AHM GP18 which was also produce by Model Power..

Thanks, Russ. I'm contemplating this. Do you think it will be a difficult conversion to do?

Do you mean that I need to obtain the plastic body of an Athearn Gp7 shell or can I simply buy the plastic parts and apply them?

I just bought some CN decals, so I guess I'm kind of committed now!
