Hello all:wave:
I have been driving by these for a year or better and finally took some pics after I noticed the name on one of the cars. The one marked Morrison-Knudsen. I found this Washington Group International - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and started thinking this car might have been used to help build the Trans-Alaska Pipeline:eek:. I don't know if that is the owner or not, but it interested me. i thought you might like to see them.

Dreadnought ends?

The hopper car in the center foreground appears to be a hopper with dreadnought ends!? , like a boxcar end, on one side.

Do you have any other photos of this car?

They look like some kind of ballast car. It's weird how each end of the car is very different-one looking like a hopper and the other looking more like a boxcar with a platform. Two thigns should be noted: Ballast cars spend most of their time parked. And anything that sits in the same prominent location with minimal surveillance will eventually get tagged.

I will be going by there today and try to get better pictures. The property is posted so I can not get any closer, But I will do the best I can.

Those look like they've been rebuilt and modified with the box car type ends. Interesting cars for sure. Be sure to post any additional pictures, different angles and such.

Ok guys, this the best I could get. I had to stay on the side of the road in a ditch to keep off the property.
To me it looks like the cars were rebuilt with a covered platform on one end with ladders.

Those sure are unique cars...!! Never seen anything like it. And the grafitti is quite spectacular...although I don't condone it, some of those guys sure have a knack for it...
 
it looks like there is some kind of door in the side near the platform end. They almost look like a regular hopper, with one end cut off flat, and an extension added to the top.

I'm sure they are ballast hoppers, but on further examination, I wonder if they didn't start life as coal hoppers. they appear to have been cut in half to make 2 shorter cars out of one long one and then the dreadnought end of an old boxcar used to cover the open end.

I never thought about that. Then I wonder why they put a covered platform on the end?

If they were used to build the Alaska pipe line, would they have wanted to keep the snow out of the ballast? They may have covered the entire hopper for that purpose, or it may be that they were putting a protective cover over some sort of operator's platform.

Charlie, I have looked those cars over with binoculars, and with the graffiti and rust I can't see much. The best I could get was th ed on one side. The th ed is separated by about a foot.

The cars are located about one mile south of the intersection of 176 st e. & Canyon rd. e. WA. I had a brainstorm and looked on Google earth and it looks like they are covered ! You will see 5 cars on the left hand side of the road.
