I've been watching Robins pics of his steel mill over the last several months and am building my own starting with the adjoining lime quarry and into the steel mill backdrop with false fronts .

Lookin' good Cobra. The weathering is fantastic on the building and the pipe work. Hope to see more soon. Thats a nice looking bridge and quarry scene. What scale is this?

Robin , this is HO and mostly CPR . I've got a couple more that I've been struggling with on size .One is the lime kiln itself and the other is the ore boat that will service the steel mill .

I'm admiring the rust on that mill too! Then I got to your last two pics...WHOA!!!!! Fantastic! Can't wait to see it all put together in a scene.

Thank You : Here's a tip on some of the rust , particularly the pipes . Get two cans a flat spray paint , one flat black , the other , red oxide . Spray the black on ( something ) first , then mist on some WATER . Before anything dries , spray on the red oxide . Go away for a couple of hours , then check it out . You'll like ! Seriously !

Hi Cobra, that's a really nice piece of work you're doing. I love the ship, is it a Sylvan kit?

Thanks for the tip on rusting too - you got some great results there.

BTW, you'll notice your thread has been moved from the Real Thing Canada (which is intended only for prototype photos) to Scratchin' and Bashin'.

Keep up the good work!!!

Val

Here's an update on more work as I start to connect the turbos from the power house to a mill building .

The ore freighter is a Bearco kit , heavily modified to resemble the Edmund Fitzgerald but not finished yet as to final details .

Neil,
That's some really fine modeling work there, fantastic job. -:thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:

Thanks for the rusting tip. Did you come across it by accident or did you devise in your secret evil laboratory.:D

Brian , I can't take credit for the water/paint technique but I can't recall specifically where I saw it . It may have been someone on the Yahoo Groups / Steel forum , and possibly Dean Freytag , but I can't remember . It's a lot of fun to use in specfic situations but is rather messy .

Neil

Thanks , and just to give you an idea where I'm headed with all this , some continuing shots of the Mill backdrop as I continue to build it .

The timeframe is the late 50's , so the Fitz was safely above water at that point . No fish or algae , but I will be building a Hulett ore unloader and have a dock scene with the Fitz unloading a shipment of taconite .
