OK It's been a while on this model. Finally got some down time to focus a little bit on greebling and making of some turrets.
Turrets - One assembled - one unassembled
Some greebling on the bottom.
Hopefully by this evening a couple of more turrets will be made.

The greebling was inspired by master builder Zathros regarding a Voyager model he told me about in one of the posts. See here:http://zealot.com/threads/greetings-from-sky-seeker.178574/
The voyager model looked really good (like plastic) so I decided to try this technique on the Defender. BTW when you do your model of the Defender the trickiest part was the mid section when it does a backwards fold also joining the engines to the main body was surprisingly tough due to overgluing and misjoins.
Also, Revell Fan inspired me as well.

Hey everyone - here's another post with the turrets.
Here are the templates cut out and scored along the blue lines.
The top templates have been folded and glued.
The side of the turrets that are going to attach to the gun barrels are fully folded and glued.
Main center section is folded and glued.
The side pieces have been glued along the center of the center portion. Alternatively, if you want you can attach the gun barrels to the side members before you glue the side member to provide an elevated effect / raised or lower gun barrels. once joined to the side members you can rotate the side members to the desired orientation and and glue in place.
The gun barrels are folded. Note that to fold them they were simply rolled between the thumb and forefinger.
Next, the tips were colored black on the inside. The gun barrels are glued and rolled. As the gun barrels dry feel free to continue to roll them between your fingers to get a rounded, cylindrical appearance.
This isn't a very clear shot, but what was done the knife that you see above my finger was used to cut a cross in the forward section of both side members.
The scoring tool you see with a blue handle was positioned though the cross in the side members to form a hole as seen below. After that glue was placed in the holes and the rear gun barrel portion with the glue tabs in the back are placed in the hole in an upright vertical position. Gluing the gun barrels in place can be tricky. Try to find a stable area away from curious cats (and kids).
All ten turrets done (at last)!

Yes the turrets are my design due to the old design have nine parts. See here:

If you want to build this turret and can make heads or tails out of this design please do so. I'm curious as to what it would actually look like.
As you can see the parts are quite tiny. Although since you made the viper I'm sure you could probably do it.
The turrets were the bane of my existence until I created a new design having only 5 parts with two extra gun barrels just in case. See here:
I copied the above template into word and adjusted it accordingly until I achieved the right size that would fit the top of the forward control sections of the Defender.

Hey everyone.
I've figured out a good way to emboss card stock.
Here's a link that could help you out.
I'm trying out another technique to get some raised / lowered features. The ring area proved to be a little tricky to cut out so embossing it seems to be a better option. I traced the black lines with the scoring tip, lightly, while positioning the pieces on top of a mouse pad (it's squishier than the rubber cutting board and has a little give while providing support to the rest of the piece you are tracing).
Once you trace the surface, you flip over on the back side and rub the area you want to raise up. Try not to apply too much pressure and use a rounded spherical blunt end for the embossing.

I'm hoping to finish a few other models before I start on it though, it's going to take a lot of focus methinks. I was looking at your build pics of your Prometheus, & I love your idea of using small magnets to "connect" the sections. Keep up the good work!

Hey everyone . A little more greebling has been done on the mid section. When finished with the mid-section, I'll post a couple of pics.
I'm almost tempted to call it the U.S.S. Braille due to some of the greebling blending in with the ship coloring. You almost can't see what was done, but you sure can feel it.

The side texturing, when you have a series of slats, should probably be cut a bit thinner to accent the spaces in between. As you can see it got a bit too close together in the center areas, but are spaced ideally at the top and bottom.
There's one more side and the mid section is DONE! (Finally) Next it's onto the texturing of the engine nacelles both inside and outside. After that the engines are to be made recessed, then the turrets, and shuttle bay will be mounted. I might add a mini display mount with a nameplate for the model. There are several examples on this forum which look great with the Galactica lettering.
After that the ship should be done. Although, I'm sure someone will say "hey won't you add some lights to it".
That's it for now.
