Battlestar Galactica Viper Mk. II

I've ventured back to paper modeling. Here are the fist pictures of my Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper Mk. II using Ninjatoes pattern.

I started by altering the antenna array by recessing the compartment on both sides and scratchbuilding the pieces using a second copy of the parts.

Step 1: I print two sheets of the parts involved. I cut the parts from one sheet and glued them on cereal box. These parts will be cut out later and used for the raised parts.

Step 2: On the second sheet, lay out 1/16" and 1/8" all around. These will be formed to create the recessed area.

Step 3: From the pattern glued on the cereal box, I carefully cut out all the parts I thought would be raised (eight pieces) and carefully glued them into place.

Doing this really looks better than the flat, one dimensional original.

I fixed your pics by opening them in Microsoft Paint and then saving them as a jpg. image, then uploading them again.

I like your technique for greebling this model. I will be watching very closely.

Interesting. If I upload a .jpg image from my computer, it won't display the image. But, if I go into Paint as you stated, and save as .jpg, it displays correctly. Very strange.

It could be the format of the camera that you are using that is not agreeing with your computer or the forum settings.

Use XNView. It solves problems like that. There are many types of .jpg pictures. XNView is free and I've used it for 10 years. It has many easy to use features, a quite powerful performance.

Well, I take the same picture and post it in my Google+ groups without issue. On my computer they display as .jpg. I don't know.

Here is step-5 of my Colonial Viper Mk. II.

I have these four sections glued together. Using long, thin tweezers was a must for gluing the 1/8" lip to the edges of the opening. My fat fingers just wouldn't fit.

Right now, without the inner bulkheads, it sits reasonably flat/straight. I'm thinking that when the bulkheads are inserted that it will fix that issue.

I really like the effect of the recessed array.

That's coming out really great! I high, diligently, recommend cutting off the glue tabs, and making a glue strip in it's place, wide enough to glue both sections together . That puts the edges on the same plane, and you will get far superior results. No overlap.

I second Zathros in that. That way you will have smooth hull with no steps (and you do not have to cut triangle tabs - I hated them).

Yes, I absolutely agree. Maybe now is a good time to try that...We'll see.
I've only been building with paper since 2011 (10 models total) so some tricks I haven't tried yet.

I did the rebuild this morning. As for now, my printer is screaming for more ink which probably won't happen for a month so for now I've got to be happy with what I have printe.

I get my ink from www.inkproducts.com You actually call them, then place the order. For $100 dollars, you can get a years worth of ink. If you can, get an "Ink Refill Station" for your printer. You get two sets of full cartridges, and a Huge Black Ink bottle, and one of each color, ,medium size color. If you print a lot, it'll last you a year. The kit also includes the syringes for refill, and the head cleaning solution, which is great if the ink dries on your printer heads. You would not believe how many people junk printers that can easily be fixed with a little soap, and hot water, injected into the ink head.
