All sorts of Level Crossings

I'll start with this one. It is at Wodonga (Vic/NSW Border).

If you drive or go by train between Mebourne and Sydney you will cross this crossing either way.


There are 3 tracks here. 2 "broad" gauge and 1 "standard" guage. This is V/Line's broad gauge passenger Albury/Melbourne service, headed for Melbourne.

Here a few examples of the Swiss 'Seetalbahn' = Lakes Valley Railroad. This line is notorious for its unguarded level crossings - almost every year there were some fatal accidents. Right now a big rebuilding program is underway, so these pics are becoming history...

The crossings on the upper pics show at least a crossbuck and/or crossing signs (although strangely placed - one ONE side of the track )
The lower two have no signs at all - the owner of the house has to 'stop, look and listen' - period. The owner of the home (left lower pic) has mounted a mirror to see an approaching train. And there were at least four trains per hour on that line!

Then there is this one. At Moulemein in Central West NSW. I intend to use this pic as a prototype for Garahbara MKII. The line is still used for wheat these days.

This is my local level crossing. Cross it whenever I go to town.

I'll have to sit there all day, one day soon, and get a pic of a train on it!

Here are a few examples of grade crossings here on Vancouver Island and, like Woodie's local crossing you may have to wait all day , if you hope to see a train.
Even if you know the schedule, the train is often late.
This one is at the north end of the lake and is one of the better protected crossings on the E&N.

This one is protected by crossbucks and a stop sign and is an example of about 1/3 of all crossings on the E&N (BTW, The road over this crossing leads to a new residential housing estate complex).

Many people own property "across the tracks" and have private crossings to accomodate them. In these cases, the matter of protection falls to the people using the crossing and relies on common sense.
A sign (to the right of the crossing) warns users that they do so at their own risk.

The law of averages says that trains can't be late all of the time, even so I felt that if I sat at The Renfrew Rd crossing long enough I should be able to catch the southbound daily passenger (the "Malahat") eventually.
Much to my supprise, It arrived last Monday only 6 minutes behind schedule.

Border Loop
Located only 1 km from the Cougal Siding (it is marked on the Lions Tourist Road from Kyogle to Beaudesert) this loop, like the Zigzag railway at Lithgow, is a method of getting trains across the Macpherson Range. It has an unusual circular viaduct which gives the trains the height to get through the mountains. There are picnic facilities at the Loop Lookout.

Yep Boppa. Been up there and had a look from the picnic/lookout area. No trains went through while I was there. The only "daylight" scheduled one would be the XPT from Brisbane to Sydney that goes through about 9am I think. (10:15am through Casino). The return XPT is in the dark. The rest would be freight, and dunno the frequency of freight on that part of the line.

You can walk down to the track as well, but I didn't when I was there.

This is a level crossing on fourth avenue. This is a track that joins the CN and the CPR together. That's north, to the right. The lads are having problems with the signal gates these days, and some days, one opens while the other one stays closed, and the trafic backs up while the boys stand around and scratch there heads.
