The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) have nearly finished the 'Bahn 2000' line - a high speed passenger train stretch between Berne and Zurich. Normal traffic on the line will be running 'only' 160 km/h (100 mph) in the first year, until a new Cab Signalling System is installed. At the moment there are still too much problems with it, so they had to install normal track signals.
Later, when the CSS has its bugs ironed out, the speed will be go up to 200 km/h (125 mph)
These days a friend of mine who is engineer is busy running high speed tests with a train with monitoring cars. They go up to 230 km/h (145 mph), which is the top speed of the loco. He gave me these two shots:
1. This is the engineers view out of the cab at 145 mph! (At left there is a highway paralleling the track behind an earth dam)
