A Bit of Guidance Requested in Customizing a Model's Font...

Hey Gentlefolk,

I know that editing a model may be carefully completed by turning a PDF into a JPG, then altering it in a paint or illustrator program, though admittedly, I'm a novice at this with contemporary operating systems. I have a question about changing the lettering on a kit.

Many years ago I had a series of fonts from the Star Trek series and movies. Unfortunately these were True Type and do not work with modern operating systems.

I also had a program called Font Developer which allowed for editing fonts in shape, color, and to be able to rotate or even stretch them across a kit.

These days I am not so sure.

Any suggestions on how to convert these old fonts to a workable tool for modern systems?

Any suggestions on how to arrange them across a hull, changing the name and registry number?

Thanks in advance for the advice...

How to curve a text along a path in Gimp:

There are similar tutorials for other programs like CorelDraw.

A few months ago I noticed that the scissors symbol was not recognized any longer in my older *.cdr files, so I switched to a red bold X to mark areas which have to be cut out. The fading out support of the font might explain that.

What is the name of the fonts you are having problems with? Maybe there is a substitute available?

I read that only Type 1 fonts are no longer supported. So a font doesn't stop working automatically if it ends on *.ttf. if it is a Type 2 your should still be able to use it. *.otf is the new standard but it is like *.mkv which can contain several other types including*.ttf. There are reports on "hybrid" fonts which end on *.ttf but which are interpreted as *.otf (which is because they are Type 2 fonts). So try renaming the fonts into *.otf and check out what happens. Make a copy first, just in case.

There are online font converters but I have no idea if they are free and if they work, so you will have to check them out for yourself.

Of course the easiest way would be doing the graphics work on an older machine which can still work with those fonts in question.

When it comes to fonts, I import a .jpeg of the font, (or whatever format it is), into Rhino, and copy it. I copy the font exactly as it is, or I am able to cut it out of the .jpeg, either way manipulate it.

If you posted a picture of the font you're having trouble with, and can't find an easy way to do it, let me know, maybe I can help. Not a whole alphabet tough, that would be really time-consuming. I have done faded, or blurred graphics on models that people download. I make a file, or put it on the part they give me for completion. It may seem odd, but I always tell people not to tell them I help them, but I am willing, it is within my means and isn't too time-consuming, though, if interesting, sometimes I'll take on a challenge. :)
