Hi All

After 2 years of work and designing and re-designing I have finally completed my first set of models.

I have designed a Excavator, Liebherr C964 Litronic, LowBoy trailer with removable gooseneck, Iveco 4 axle truck with a mobile crane on the back of the truck.

Yes some people will say that this is like Chriess models but those models did not really worked out and is a complete waste of time, the main thing that came out of those models was how to do some things in getting it work, I must say that it is a very good idea, but if things really worked out then it would be a different story.

These models have been started from scratch with catalogs from Liebherr and tons of photos, the Iveco Also helped out with lots of photos and catalogs. The mobile crane arm was worked off from a hand full of cellphone pictures of a arm in operation, the Lowboy trailer is my very own concept trailer to suite the excavtor.

WOW!! Quite amazing! The articulations of these models are incredible. Excellent workmanship. Are you planning to make templates available, or were these one offs. There's a lot of work in there. I would like to hear of what kind of software you used, (or didn't) all the fun facts of your build. :welcome1: to the forum by the way, that's the way to make an entrance!!:thumb:
 
So many questions.....

At the moment I have not yet made my mind up on the models been a one off or releasing them.... there is still some work that does need to be done to the models to get them more buildable.

I terms of software that I used, I used AutoCAD 2008, 2011 Mechcanical and 3DS-MAx 2011 Designer, for some of the less intense parts I used Pepakura Designer 3 in that of flat packing the parts.
for the most part there was at least 2 to 5 times I would have to build small sections to get the parts to move and be strong enough to be moved in the required designed direction.
For example the main turning point of the excavator in which the body and the tracks turn was trickly in that for one to pick the model up and not have to re-assemble the model and over time damage it, it took 3 goes to get the swivl to be strong enough and have enough gap to turn freely, but not require multiple re-assemblys. the devlopment time was about 3 weeks.

The same went for the for the mobile crane arm in that the arm was done with ratios of paper been bent and folded to allow the movement and strength at the same.
the delvopment time was 1 month and 4 builds later and many changes with the ratios to get that right as well.

The lowboy trailer was easier than the rest of the builds but there was quite a lot of time spent in getting strengh in the model. One thing the trailer was in fact designed twice before finally setting on the path of the removalble goose neck.

There was one design rule that I set out, that was to design the model out of 80 gram A4 paper as that would keep my printing costs and paper costs to a minium but also making strong enought odo what is required.

In terms of models to follow again there is at least 4 models been put into development at this moment in time. one been the Satrun V rocket, this one is going to be done in a way that does not require glue to assemble the model.

In terms of Tools I ended up making use of some medical things to get the some of parts together, One been a modified needle and to apply the glue to the paper.

To give one an idea of the number of parts in each model:
Mobile Crane Arm = 221 parts.
Truck = 555 parts.
Trailer = 440 parts.
excavator = 363 parts.

Those are some great models, outstanding work. I do hope you decide to make the plans public, would love to have this set up next to my other trucks. What a great introduction, welcome aboard.
 
Wow!

A very impressive accomplishment. Your models are certainly in a class by themselves. I love the way you've tackled the whole package - truck, trailer, excavator - not just one element but all of them. It looks like it will provide many hours of great play time, and in between is a fabulous display model.

Great work, and to echo the other comments, please post more of your work and "in progress" shots. It would be very educational to see how you developed the various mechanisms.

For the gluing tool that I came up with, have used a medical needle and cut the tip off as to have an open tip instead of a angled tip which then helps with the gluing process.
In this case you do this tool at your OWN risk... :eek:

Here is the photo of the tool that i came up with, I have used medical needle and cut the tip off and made it open tip instead of the angled tip.
You can glue alot better, one does this at THERE OWN RISK!!!

For the tool that I made I used a medical needle and cut the angled piece of which make life a bit easierto glue and control the flow as well.

So sorry, I imagine that the software will stop flagging you as you post more. For some reason, if someone new posts a lot of pics (I like pics!) it flags it. It stops after a while. I will try to be more vigilant! :)

Woah - that hurts me really........
but i have plenty of messages that the models work out good, but are not for the beginner.....

Alas, what keept you from successful building the models ?
I would definitely want to know so that my future models are more and successful buildable
