    CadRail

Prices Yes, all the non-free software has advanced up the price scale. I bought them because I knew it would be at least 6-8 years before I could actually build anything, so I am thinking I got my money's worth over the years trying out different ideas  Plus, the earlier...

3rd PlanIt by El Dorado Software 3rd PlanIt by El Dorado Software is another option. I started with CADRail but found myself using AutoCAD when I got frustrated with the limited libraries and spline implementation in CADRail. Here are some screen shots of one of the provided examples...

    Digitrax Question

Digitrax question... You are fine with everything until you want to access Functions 9 through 12 with the throttle. Don't get that 'lump in the throat' feeling though as those functions are on the new sound decoders not on the DH142 decoder you have. You can start a DCC friendly layout and...

    Miniature Machining

Metal turning You are welcome :-) For metal, I would go over to a hardware store and get a piece of aluminum rod, at least 1/2" diameter. Cut a piece with a hacksaw or metal bladed bandsaw about 3 inches long. Learn about the metal tools with that at low speeds and use gloves to pick up the...

    way to go Walthers!

Nov 29! Did Walther's have a tracking number listed? Even the cheapest option, plain old UPS Mail that I used had a tracking number... The UPS number should at least show if it made it to a US west coast city...

Walther's Order Status If you created an account, you can login to Walther's and check the status. www.walthers.com -- login page I had stuff back ordered that showed up on their website as "undetermined" for a shipping date. A week later while I was checking on a shipment I noticed a new...

    spectrum steamers DCC ready

Digitrax Decoder Dilemma For starters - If the 2-8-0's work and do everything you want, leave them alone. If you do decide to change, they are tight on space and will require a DZ sized decoder (Yes, the 'Z' is for Z scale  so you know there is not much room.) As for the 4-6-0's, they...

Please give me tips for lighting my HO railroad

Lighting Can you attach hooks in the ceiling above the layout? If you can, you may want to consider a double 48 inch long florescent light with an attached plug... Here is a $29.00 US option from Home Depot:

    Alcohol?

Adhesion I use a 50/50 mix of Rubbing Alcohol and Woodland Scenics (WS) cement. I also use the same mix for WS's other scenic ground cover materials (flock, weeds, grass, dirt, gravel, etc). A few other side benefits of dilution with alcohol are that it dries fast, rarely get a clogged mist...

Quality of track between the different companies

Aye but the package and bottoms of the Flex-Track and turnouts all say Code 83. So much for labeling  The whole point railBuilderdhd is that you should be careful about mixing manufacturers or be prepared to file, sand and shim things to get them aligned.

    Derailment Problems

Derailed fun for son Here is a picture of the parts 60103 is talking about: I have also had to file the frog "V" so it is level with the Guard Rails as well as open or close the Guard Rails some to stop derailments/shorts.

Quality of track between the different companies

Track I have some Shinohara (Walther's) Code 83 Flex from 10 years ago and 4 pieces I bought this year for a spur line. The new stuff needed the sprue cut off/sanded flush, rail ends nipped flush and a serious washing. I will not be buying Shinohara again but not just because of the quality...
