best brands of N scale locomotives

I like Kato, Atlas, Lifelike, Intermountain and some older Con Cor PA's made by Kato. I try to pick up locos in ERIE, Erie Lackawanna and Great Northern. For the money I am very impressed with the Lifelike locos. Their SD-7 is a super quiet and smooth running loco. I happen to like the...

Wood, Plastic or whatever. Favorite Materials.

Maybe automotive transmission gears, or Boston Gearworks if they are still in business. The only thing left would be to turn them out on a lathe with a miller. Reminds me of the old wringer washer my mother used to have back in the early '50's.

Instead of a jig to make corregated siding, would a pair of long gears work better to crinkle the metal as it fed through?

Ray, I think Toby is about as big as you'll find in the Ertl diecast Thomas line. It's still pretty small for an HO truck. An N-scale chassis should fit a lot easier for HOn30. Bachmann took over the English Hornby HO-scale "Thomas" line and you can pick up a Thomas or Percy now for...

Ray, Thanks for the dimensions. I bought the Ertl "Toby" for my grand-daughter, maybe she'll loan it to me for details. Say, you didn't happen to take a picture of the "Duck" before it's demise? I have some old AHM diesels laying around here someplace, most of them use a 4-wheel power...

Sorry, I got so excited when I saw it I forgot who posted it. Ray, Can you tell me length, width and height of the sides?

Fred, Can you give any dimensions on the "Toby" body. I have a 2-yr old grandson just coming into wooden "Thomas" now and his 6-yr old big sister has a collection of most of the Ertl metal Thomas stuff.

Shaygetz, I like your ideas and your pictures. Now I have two more questions: 1) What are you using for domes, small pill bottles? 2) Did you cut your roof supports with a knife cuts or do you have a jig like a balsa stripper?

Wood, Plastic or whatever. Favorite Materials.

I observed some like to build with wood, plastic or cardboard, many use a combination. Any comments on your favorite building materials for modifying locos and is there any source of cheap materials that are not often mentioned. Pictures are always appreciated.

    Gluing metal to wood??

Whenever I work with CA I always coat my fingers with dish soap. The CA will never stick to it. Just a couple of drops is enough, just rub your fingers together to spread it around. I also use this trick when working on car or motorcycle engines. After you get your hands all greasy you...

Dimesions of HO to On30 converted locos

Sumpter, You're right, all I have to do on the MDC Shay is cobble-up a taller cab and widen the walk-ways. I have that "Shay, Titan of the Timber" book and it has many pictures of Shays. Might be able to find something close to what I want to do. Now If I can just remember where I...

    Convert AHM O-4-0 to On30?

Johnathan, I plan to use a pivot arm for the rear truck...should give a little play in the turns. Moved the shifter into powerpoint and added some ideas.

    Convert AHM O-4-0 to On30?

Here is my old HOn3' 2-4-4 Forney by LMB. The nose is a little longer than the AHM shifter.

    Convert AHM O-4-0 to On30?

I was digging through some HO loco boxes and discovered this little AHM "Shifter" 0-4-0 made by Rivarossi. Looking at the side view, I see the start of an On30 0-4-4 Forney. Any suggestions?

    First RAW photo

I have no idea which one is RAW because you have too many variables to adjust. The bottom picture appeals to me because the grass is greener and the background trees can be seen. Most tall-tree country does not have the bright sunlight of the top picture, it's usually in a rainy area with...

Dimesions of HO to On30 converted locos

Thanks for the tips guys. The "Waddlin' Duck" that Shamus did looks about what I would think a backwoods railroad would throw together. I like to make stuff that looks like it had to be designed a certain way for simplicity and practicability. Since I've already put in a lot of time staring...

Dimesions of HO to On30 converted locos

I'm toying with the idea of making On30 locos from some of my HO locos. My problem is the width. When I measure my On30 Bachman 2-6-0 Bumblebee the width is 1-15/16 while most HO locos are about 1-3/8" wide. Making the frame wider on a diesel or steamer should be no problem if you are...
