    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

An idea of intended outcomes... Just as @DanBKing and @lyter1958 before me, I couldn't live with the window arrangements that come with the kit. Research using pictures of resin kits suggests the frame is a lot wider than UHU02's, so here's my effort at a replacement - still needs glazing and...

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

I'm working on the assumption something will be better than nothing... :)

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

OK. Copyright breaches ahoy. Here's the interior I put together. I cut the skylight out as I figured any light making it through the sphere might allow you to see something. Will find out in due course! Sneaky view of rear corridor (leading to the centrifuge I won't be building!) and proof HAL...

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Yes I know - but not particularly proud of ripping off a construction method I stumbled on. I'll let you be my guide as to whether to post a pic!

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

I've managed to knock together a cockpit from bits and pieces of images I found on the net. Completely unethical, probably, and I doubt it'll even be visible once it's all put together, but I couldn't face looking into an empty shell. Nearly completed so will be back on to the main kit again soon

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Managed to find some photos from early on in this thread, so I've posted them back in. Pity I couldn't find my first 'nut'!

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Thank you for the kind words Zealots! :) I must be doing something right! Here's the bottom hemisphere building up. So far so good. Horrible feeling it could still all go very wrong. Only two sheets of parts left to go! (But having thoughts of going off-piste and doing some scratchbuilding on...

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Slowly, the top hemisphere takes shape. I've had a printer nightmare - so printing the additional sheets for the recessed sections didn't work out. So I've used some watercolours to address the issues with the recessed rings. Needless to say, I've followed @DanBKing s lead here - I could not go...

    Thank you Zathros thumbsup

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

This is getting scary now - not many sheets of paper left to go! Here's the completed neck, made largely out of edge glueing. The large rings weren't as tricky as I'd expected. Nor were the little 'escape rocket' assemblies to the front of the heat shield before the spine section. It was just a...

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Having read @DanBKing s thread, I was interested to hear he's used water colour pencils to tidy up edges - I wondered if there's any schools of thought on what to use, as some of my joins might well benefit from some treatment!?

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Shaping up! I'll get a bit more of the neck done and then do a close up. assembling these rings is my first proper effort at edge-glueing. So far so middling ;) Still haven't secured the section to the rear of the spine, so the rockets are a bit wonky at the mo. As you can see, I've been reading...

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Just to be clear - I was joking about the yellow, I just hope it looks OK without the lighting. In fact - I just hope it will look OK when it's done! :)

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

OK. Just biding my time before I get the chance to get a sheet of suitable card for @zathros suggestion to bolster up the carcases of the rockets. But here we have the whole rear end made up, albeit dry-fitted. Just a keep in touch message. Looks so much better with the nozzles fitted though :)

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Well it was definitely white/grey in 2001 wasn't it? I think Bowman must have inadvertently parked up a bit too close to Io, and all that volcanic sulphur ruined the paint job! I wonder if some brave soul would go through the trouble of making all those modules on the spine to make the model of...

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Hi @lyter1958 - I've just been to see your build thread but unfortunately can't see the images. From the comments it sounds like you did great. I don't know a thing about how to light up a model but I'm sure yours must look impressive. Maybe I should just aim to paint mine yellow and place it in...

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Not much progress to report since last post - but here's all three of the rocket assemblies dry fitted. Can't believe this is nearly everything to the rear of the neck done! Really happy with how this is looking so far :) (Don't worry that the propulsion section is skew-wiff from the spine -...

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

That's a fantastic tip, would never have thought of that. Thanks, Zathros. Do I need to glue that coiled cardboard, or just let it sit snugly in the tube?

    Discovering UHU02's 2001 Discovery One

Here's one of the engine flutes/cowls (god knows!) Dry fitted for effect. Went together ok using the tabs. Just for the avoidance of doubt, as it's not clear from UHU02's own pics of the assembly, the really long strips are wrapped in a coil around the main tube and act as 'spacers' for this...
