    Are you a model railroader?

Les here's a sample of my ELMOS (Extremely Lazy Manual Operating System). Each car has an index card listing the possible destinations for the car. A paper clip marks the current location and the destination is the next industry on the list. To operate I grab a handful of cards and random...

    Are you a model railroader?

All of my track is down and wired. I have been working on the cards which will control my operations. The scenery is only about 1/3 finished and progress on the scenery has been stalled while I figure out what I want to do. Until the cards are finished, I just make up a switch list and...

Just a guess but I'm thinkin' someone's been dealing with Internet Trains. They have a long reputation of being difficult to deal with. Tom

are non-magnetic wheels necessary with magnetic uncouplers?

One thing I didn't see mentioned was the steel weights used in cars. I have taken to replacing the steel weights with brass stock. I use 1/16 X 1 inch brass from McMaster-Carr (item #8954K44). Seems to be slightly heavier for the same size than steel. Just my two cents. Tom

    Wiring woes

Bob, the way to determine the type of turnout is easiest if you have access to some type of circuit tester. I use a cheapie $10 multimeter. Set it to measure ohms. Apply one lead to the stock rail and the other lead on the corresponding rail after the points. The needle should swing all the...

    Railroading on vacation

Trains are incidental to my vacations. If we happen to run across a train museum, etc., that's fine but we seldom plan a trip just for trains. For example, last fall we went to New Orleans and toured the French Quarter and walk along the riverfront. While we were there, KCS was running a...

    Lone Wolf Operators:

Another lone wolf here. I can run two engines at once as long as one is running laps (DC). I can then perform switching tasks in one of my towns. I'm not good at multi-tasking (some would say I'm not good at single tasking) so that's about all I will ever run. Tom

    Photo Fun 5-2-08

Tom, I always enjoy seeing the big stuff. Some new JD tractors and a load of seed are being delivered to Drew's Feed and Seed. Lots of work yet to do on this scene, people, more ground cover, litter around the dock, items on the dock, etc. Tom

    Old-Timer Needs an Opinion...

I wouldn't recommend it. The Homasote can sag even with such short spans. Given the short spans, the 1/4 plywood should provide adequate support for the Homasote. Tom

    Linux

I just bought a new Dell with Vista last month. As soon as I'm comfortable that it's stable (already blue screened three times and I had to run ImageX once) I'm going to put Ubuntu on the old machine to try it out. Tom

I hate to disagree with you but Firefox loads this and just about every other site very quickly. And yes, I have Adblock Plus. Tom
