Help with Walthers New River Mining Co kit

You could always compare it to the prototype located on the Craig branch on the Std Gauge D&RGW! Of course this mine is selectively compressed - maybe they compressed the parts right out of it!

    Modeler's License

I tend to not care for the freelance layouts I've seen in numerous model RR articles. Why? Because they generally relate to nothing I've ever seen. It's true that some have done a good job at looking really lie a RR that could have existed. Some notable exceptions are Allegany Midland (Tony...

    A Period Poll

The second reason for modeling the steam to diesel transition era - having both steam and diesel has been a compelling reason for modeling that time period. For most railroads, you would really have to stick with 1940-1955 because prior to 1940, there were few diesels in action and after 1955...

    A Period Poll

I also plan on building an 80's era layout once I finally get re-established in a place where I can do that. Might be another year or two but I have been collecting rolling stock to allow me to run 80's era Rio Grande freights. I haven't been able to resist a few 60's items so I might trade...

    Flex Track

Thanks for looking it up. I've been on the Atlas forums since 1994 but was too lazy to lookup the part numbers. When I did the math, it seemed the five pack came out more expensive which didn't make sense - thats why I guessed it to be the code 83 track.

    Flex Track

I don't know which Atlas part numbers correspond to which track. Atlas sells code 83 track which is closer to the real thing size wise, band more expensive than the older but very reliable code 100, which is slightly over size. It could be the 168 is the code 100 and the 178 is a 5 pack of the...

    stub vs. double ended yards?

No brainer. Double ended yard for sure, as space allows. My last two layouts had double ended yards with some stub end tracks in the middle. Why not have your cake:thumb: and eat it too!

    Flex Track

Cheapest - Razor saw (if your really on a tight budget) not that easy to use A little more costly - Xuron - works pretty darn good but not a perfect cut. most costly - Dremel with cutoff disc (my favorite) give best cleanest cut. Wear eye protection cause the cutting wheel breaks sometimes...

    i'm a firm beleiver in the 4x8

Well, in my case I have many boxes of HO trains and am not about to switch to N. Besides at 47 my eyes are finding N scale to be too small. My only point would be if people have room for a 4x8, then you might be able to squeeze in another 6-inches on the side and end and increase the radii so...

    Novice Tutorial - Accurail Boxcars

Gary, The draft gear boxes are nicer I agree. All the modifications you did make for a much better box car. The only thing I was thinking is that a beginner might find the modifications a bit much for them. There are some methods to making an Accurail box car layout ready for novices...

    i'm a firm beleiver in the 4x8

But even passenger cars prior to the 1960's were still 85' long. So even older RR's aren't exempt from sharp curves. My California Zephyr cars started operating in 1949 and they are 85' long.

EMD F7 A-B units, Athearn Genesis or Proto 2000?

Dick, You are correct. The Lifelike F3's are indeed from the small line of Proto1000 loco's. I was having a senior moment. They are nice F units for a modest price. And yes, I though most people knew that any loco from the Genesis line would have nothing in common with the Blue Box line...

Domino Layout Construction Pros & Cons

I read the article and I'm not sure why David Barrow went to domino benchwork other than he may have been anticipating moving or retiring to a smaller residence and that style of benchwork lended to adapting to other or smaller spaces. Thats the only advantage I can see. It is easy to move.

    i'm a firm beleiver in the 4x8

L girder is unnecessarily complicated IMHO but if anyone likes it, why not? Foam is certainly attractive for layouts, esp scenery. They allow for lightweight tables too. My only misgiving personally is that I still like to nail down the track and with foam you are forced to use glue. Well...

    Novice Tutorial - Accurail Boxcars

Thats a nice modification, but one could probably get screw on coupler lid and trucks without quite as much work. The easy way would be to simply drill a hole in the lid and scew it on after mounting KD#5 or KD#58 couplers. The bolster would work fine without adding in the piece - just a...

EMD F7 A-B units, Athearn Genesis or Proto 2000?

For the price, Proto 2000 makes a nice looking F3. I think F3 is the only F they make but I've heard an F7 is in the works since Walthers bought Lifelike. Athearn Genesis, despite occasional QAQC issues, have the best looking models, paint jobs and details. They even go so far as to offer...

    i'm a firm beleiver in the 4x8

Galen, The 4x8 has endured because of the convenient size of plywood sheets. The curves are just too sharp in my opinion for much of what we operate today. Flex track, and some modular track comes allows larger radii than the traditional 18 and 22 inch curves. As far as platform, the ping...

EMD F7 A-B units, Athearn Genesis or Proto 2000?

Comment about Athearn Genesis AB sets. Feed back is that the sound quality isn't that good on them. If you get the non-sound equipped, you can get AB sets for under $200. I just picked up an F3AB set in Rio Grande for $150 plus shipping in Ebay for example.

    i'm a firm beleiver in the 4x8

4x8 layouts have their place, but in the modern world of longer cars they are a straight jacket. Many longer freight cars and passenger cars need 22 or 24 inch curves, so you really need a 5x9 as a new standward IMHO.
