    Dogbones and Folded Dogbones

Personally...and this is just me....I prefer the looks of a single main. It is more prototypical for the area I live in and I just think it looks better. However, if you look at my track plan, you'll notice I have a double main. Even though I like the looks of a single main better, I want the...

    Couldn't Leave Well Enough Alone...

Russ, my point exactly. I would much rather make changes now in the planning and early construction stages than to make them later when it will cost me more time and money. ;) Tyson, one problem that I have always had in designing a track plan was having "too much". I tried to avoid that...

Hehehe...making changes later is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. :D

    Construction Has Begun!!!

Personally....I'd go rent a saw from Home Depot before I'd even THINK about attempting to make the cuts I did with a hand saw. ;)

Desert Mountains - N-Trak Module in progress

Lookin' good!! I gotta admit...I'm scared to death of why my scenery is gonna look like when I get to that stage. I wish I could design my track plan, build the benchwork, put down the roadbed and then let someone else lay all my track and do all the scenery. My comfort level with...

Final Track Plan Wasn't So Final

Well...as construction on my layout progresses I occasionally have a brainstorm and run back into the computer to make some modifications to what was SUPPOSED to be my final track plan. I'm at it again. First of all, here is what was supposed to be my final track plan...

    Construction Has Begun!!!

Thanks Matt. I'm having fun with it. :) Hehehe....my grandfather always told me if you were gonna build something then build it to last. ;) Speaking of going from here, i have made some progress. The BNSF crews have been hard at work establishing subroadbeds for the mainline. It's...

    Construction Has Begun!!!

Thanks. :) Actually though, that "tooth-like" piece that you're seeing is simply the result of plywood only being 8 feet long. The joint is actually just a plain ole' straight joint consisting of part of the 2x6 perimeter board from each module bolted together with two 1/2" bolts. The...

    Construction Has Begun!!!

Progress!!! I managed to make a little progress on the benchwork Wednesday night after church and then Thursday night when we got home from Thanksgiving with the folks. You know what the benchwork is made of. I went and bought some cheap OSB 1/4" plywood to serve as a deck. Foam will be...

    Kato C44-9W

THIS link will list them all, but you're not allowed to get any until I finish getting all the ones that I want. ;) Okay...so I thought it would. Click on N Models at the top and then scroll down on the left side until you find GE C44-9W. It lists all of the releases and which locomotives...

    BNSF Track Plan

Didn't use any glue on it, but I did use a clamp to assist me in holding the angled portions tight together while I screwed the screws in. As it is, it's not too heavy. I can easily pick up each section on my own. When I get plywood and backdrop on it then it will be considerably heavier...

    Construction Has Begun!!!

Ahhh....you noticed. ;) Unforunately, I haven't had a chance to get to Home Depot for plywood, so my framework still sits in the garage waiting for me to get back to it. That soldering post you did was VERY helpful. On my last layout (which I managed to get about 3 pieces of flex down...

Layout #06 - Trying Again - Opinions Welcome

Hmmmm...I might have to play around with that a little bit and see what I can do. The biggest problem I can see is the 3" difference in elevation between the UP interchange and the hidden staging.

    BNSF Track Plan

Oh....well, to be honest, that stub end yard is the biggest part of the layout that I'm still questioning. I was thinking of putting a coal tipple there, but I'm not sure what to do there really. That little section is still up for debate, and it may stay that way until I actually get ready to...

Layout #06 - Trying Again - Opinions Welcome

Cidcase, thanks for your input. :) Regarding reversing loops, I originally had two reversing loops drawn into the layout so I could turn an entire train around no matter which direction it was going. In the interest of having less track and more scenery, I opted to delete them based on the...

Layout #06 - Trying Again - Opinions Welcome

Arlaghan, that was some great advice. Thanks. :) Most of it I had already thought about, but it's still good to hear as a reminder every once in a while. ;) Regarding the two "tunnel tracks", I was actually already planning to extend them all the way to the edge of the layout. That...

Layout #06 - Trying Again - Opinions Welcome

Well, they're more for looks than anything. The red spur is a Union Pacific Interchange which represents a UP line coming in from somewhere else to meet up with the BNSF line. Instead of running it off the side of the layout like is often times done, I opted to run it into a tunnel. In...

    BNSF Track Plan

That's a good link with some good info, but it's not really applicable in my case. The hidden staging yard will be nothing more than storing full length trains that are already put together and ready to roll. There won't really be any prototypical operations in that yard...just storage...a...

    Construction Has Begun!!!

If you don't want to buy a miter saw, I highly recommend renting one. In my case I had a lot of boards that had to be cut at a 45 degree angle on the end. I could have done it with my Skilsaw, but it would have been more work and the cuts wouldn't have been as good. Well worth the $20 or so...
