    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

COMMAND MODULE BOTTOM The bottom of the command module is a sort of rounded teardrop shape with a lot of paneling. The original part had no detailing and was a good bit off on the sizing. I resized it by increasing the length by .625”. Next I cut off all the tabs on the orange section. These...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

A main part to the redraw was adding lined areas at the front and rear. This simulates the “grooved” pieces on the studio model. I also added the banded areas and the hull details, most of which are drawn on but I chose to make raised. This part doesn’t have a lot of intricate detail, but it...

REAR FUSELAGE This part connects to the main fuselage. Along with a complete redraw, I cut the tapered end off the rear. This area is flat on the studio model and is where the main engine and a lot of greeblies are attached. Again, I cut off all the tabs and glued new ones made of printer paper...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

Added the other small segmented strip to the starboard side of the fuselage.

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

@Revell-Fan That's an interesting thought. I have some old parts already built so maybe I'll do that for reference.

    Hello from Dayton!

Welcome aboard, fellow Buckeye! You'll have a good time here.

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

The top was the hardest part because the tube cage on the model restricts getting a good look at it, but it seems rather plain. There are more greeblie parts I’ll have to try and make, but I’m holding off on that until I get to the tubing. I also added the four small trapezoid “wings” at the...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

Repainting the part had to be approached as 2 parts. Like most of the Hawk, the port and starboard sides are not mirror images of each other due to the last-minute freehand nature of detailing the model. So each side was done separately with little part crossover. I added panels, lines, markings...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

FUSELAGE This is the main fuselage that connects to the rear of the command module. It got a complete repaint. Through studying the model I discovered the proportions of this part are off by being too narrow in the center. Changing that would have lead to a host of changes I wasn’t ready to try...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

    C. WINGS Before working on the fuselage I reworked the wings that hold the main guns. I redrew all the graphics as they were not like the model at all. There are lots of raised details top and bottom and also some color. There are also some domed plastic pieces on the wing bottoms that I...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

@zathros The main problem I had was how the orange paint wraps around the command module. I've attached an additional pic of the bottom. It's supposed to follow the curve and have 2 small "projections" toward the rear on either side. The rounded part on the bottom is a separate piece.

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

Thanks @zathros . It's in the Resources section under Space 1999. It's the Hawk model by JayBats.

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

COMMAND MODULE The command module and all the remaining parts got massive repaints. The original Hawks were built with tons of Airfix model bits and greeblies so they had a lot of detail. And, there was a lot of last-minute painting when it was decided the Hawk looked too much like the Eagle on...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

Thanks @Rhaven Blaack . Actually, "freehand" was probably the wrong word. Almost all my work is already in the computer. I work in printing so all my manipulation is in either Photoshop, Illustrator and/or InDesign. The "freehand" stuff is where I need things to meet up on parts that are...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

None in paper that I know of @Revell-Fan . Just plastic and resin is all I see on the 'net. It'd be a great project for someone who's made tank-like vehicles already ;););)

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

Thanks guys. @Rhaven Blaack This is the biggest seat-of-the-pants model I've tried yet. A lot of the modifications and parts I'm making or trying to make I'm doing freehand so there are no templates being used, except for the actual repaint to JayBats file. So I don't see a shareable file coming...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

TARGETING SENSORS I started with the targeting sensors because they are the simplest part. They are simple box shapes. I cut the tab off the long side and glued a new one made from 20 lb. printer paper from the back for a butt-fit seam. I kept the small tabs at the front and rear, as I do with...

    SPACE: 1999 MARK IX HAWK

It’s only been a few years since I ventured into the world of Space: 1999. I was too young to catch it in first run and it wasn’t in syndication where I lived. The only exposure I had to the show was through toy and model ads and the rare sci-fi publication. Thanks to the Internet, I was finally...
