Started working on the pauldrons... I think they are coming along nicely. :)

EDIT: This is the finished model: Haven't had the time to build anything for a while now, but Fallout 4 has some nice power armor designs. So here it is the iconic Power armor from Fallout 1. I did add some details to the texture that was not in FO4, but it was present on the original ones...

So basically you want to do is to scan in a template already printed, virtually cut them out of the scanned image and reassemble the 3D model that you can virtually paint in 3D mode? (ZBrush comes to mind for the painting part)

Yes and no :) I've built one or two models with LEDs inside, but mine usually needed point lights, which I usually managed with LED backed optical fibers, and/or Lumibugs (which are basically wire mounted SMD LEDs). The closest I got to the kind of lighting I can see on your "build a planet"...

@JTomos Before starting on a kit you could also try to print some free models from the Net, if for nothing else to experiment with techniques, since you can reprint the parts as many times as you need. EDIT: Oh I see you intend to do some finger practice before never mind then ;) @DanBKing: Hi...

Here is the next update: It was a pain in the ... behind to work around the wires inside the body but I think I managed it OK. I did manage to leave some ugly glue fingerprints on the skirt so I'll probably have to reprint those parts and either put it on as another layer or redo that...

As far as I am aware no. That particular piece of software rips the model from the actual scene in video memory and there are a lot of transformations and whatnot that is done to it (for multiple reasons). If you intend to get a model from a game I'd advice trying to get a resource...

Ok this took some time, started on the legs some time ago boot the foot turned out really ugly, with highly visible glue lines and the sole got a little deformed too. so modified the template a little... ... Then I've ran out of paper and almost of glue, the particular brands I use became...
