Mike Hagarty's N scale 'Mountain Sub'

I finally uploaded a track plan, sory for the poor quality, I haven't had time to do it on the computer yet. There will be 2 subdivions, with a crew chang point at the main yard. The Mountain Sub and the Foothills Sub. Interestingly, I haven't actually started the Mountain Sub yet! I wanted a...

Mike Hagarty's N scale 'Mountain Sub'

mcbane666 ,I just looked through your web site, very nice work. Is that oil pump a kit or did you make it yourself? I might need to get a few of them on my layout!

Mike Hagarty's N scale 'Mountain Sub'

I've dicided to make staging, one big double ended yard. 1 track in and 1 track out. That way I don't need to make a stub ended track to get the locmotives back down a clear track. Thanks for everyone's thoughts!

Mike Hagarty's N scale 'Mountain Sub'

The main and siding are laid on the grain elevator module now. I decided to make a long double track with 2 crossovers in the middle. From switch to switch it is 38 feet, ( 100 car trains?! ) so it can hold 2-50 car trains, and stil have the main open, or 1-100 car train if there happens to be a...

Mike Hagarty's N scale 'Mountain Sub'

I have a question for everyone about my staging yard, maybe you could offer some suggestions. Here is where the staging yard will be. I was going to have 2 seperate yards, each with 6 tracks, one for Eastbound trains and one for Westbound. (point to point) Then I thought about just...

Mike Hagarty's N scale 'Mountain Sub'

Ok, no scenery yet, I want to get all of my rail cars and locomotives out of boxes and on the layout, but I need someplace to go, AKA a staging yard, but I have to get there first, so... the track will take a right curve onto 2 - 16" x 8' modules, where there may be a grain elevator...

Mike Hagarty's N scale 'Mountain Sub'

I've been busy laying track and wiring the layout. Here is what I've got done so far. Minimum radius 33.5" visible, 22.5" hidden Maximum grade 2.0% The layout will be point to point single level, with a working 6-8 track staging yard at each end, 2 sidings and a large yard in the middle. I'll...

    Kato & Accumate couplers

I switch all of my couplers out to MT, that way, everything always stays connected. I found that the Atlas couplers wouldn't even stay connected to each other, even with only 10 or 15 cars. MT's will hold a 50 car train up a grade with no problem.

    when to solder?

I use a Cold Heat soldering tool, I got it for a present one year, and thought it was cheap, but it works really good! I've never melted ties with it, it heats the rail up so quick and cools down almost insantly. The tips break farily easily, so you can't apply very much pressure, but you...

    New layout in the works.

Very good use of the space! I like around the room layouts, they give you lots of run, and a realistic, point to point layout. They don't take up much space either!

    Just curious????

I've seen it done before, if it isn't right next to an N scale model, it looks fine. Too bad they don't have a standard scale for all models!

    Great little railroad to model

Short lines can be very fun to model, I'm thinking of modeling one on my layout. The only problem is, do I want to sacrifice real estate for a short line, or have more main line run?! HMMMMM.
