    Train Wreck

We had a wreck like that a little while back. The cause was violation of rule G! Or so I'm told.

    reworking the lifelike docksider

I would ditch the old motor, it looks like the kind they put in toys, they're made to be cheap, not for scale speed or reliability. When I cut an motor shaft, I wrap the motor in plastic and tape it to prevent filings from getting in it. If you can find a piece of metal tubing that will slip...

    reworking the lifelike docksider

Sounds like you already thought about the flywheel!

    reworking the lifelike docksider

I've found the people at NWSL to be very helpful. I don't know if you'll have room for a flywheel in there, but 0-4-0 tank engines tend to stall on track turnouts because of the very short electrical pickup length. A flywheel could help prevent this. Another method is to have a dedicated car...

    Smoke box color

I've been using Polly Scale flat aluminum. I brush it on, then over over it with a light airbrushing of Floquil (are they still around?)engine black to weather to taste. The picture is of an engine with a freshly shopped appearance. On some of my other engines, the aluminum color barely shows...

    TV/Railroad Accuracy

Hollywood still thinks most trains whistle, even diesels.Maybe it's not such a bad idea.

With the glang ,,glang of the warning bell

Nice looking scenes! I like your kitbashed locos, maybe I should take the saw to some of those old diesel carcasses laying around and make a homemade job just for fun. As a kid, I grew up near the right of way of the long abandoned Washington (DC) & Old Dominion Railroad. They had a few...

Horizon Hobby Distributors, the Death of Athearn

In defense of my remarks about the Athearn products, of course I know that almost everthing else comes from overseas. Most of my locos were made there. I just thought the announcement claiming to keep "operations" in the USA was a little deceptive.

Horizon Hobby Distributors, the Death of Athearn

Although they state they will keep operations in the USA, I suspect I will see "Made in somewhere else" on Athearn products in the future. I heard Levi's jeans is closing their last US factory and all products will be made overseas. I forgot, what do Americans make? Oh yeah, fast food.

Do you watch the eBay HO Category?

I look at ebay now and then, usually for a laugh. I use the grey matter method of keeping track of what I own. I like it that way because I will occasionally forget about a piece of rolling stuck and then rediscover it, which makes me appreciate it once more. Just hope my drive doesn't crash!

    Were you from...?

I found The Gauge after the Chaski model railroad board died. I like this board, it allows picture posting which makes it colorful and interesting. RR Model newsgroups are nice, but they don't have the features and the fellowship this board does. Long Live The Gauge!

    Pennsy-izing a Mantua 0-6-0

I might do the valve gear, but for now I am considering it to be a Stephenson geared model with piston valves. Thanks for the info! Rob

    The Dog

Here is a picture of my two weiner dogs, Hans on the right and Fritz, on the left. I like my Dachshunds because they remind me of locomotives - long, low slung, lots of tractive effort, loud and they have PRR Tuscan fur! Well, almost. Unfortunately, Fritz passed away in March, but his brother...

    Ghost Story - TRUE!

Ghost trains do exist! When I was about 13, early seventies, I had a 4X8 layout in one room in our basement and my Dad, a ham radio amatuer, had his tranceiver ststion in an adjacent room. One day I was doing some scenery work on my layout, and my Dad was fiddling with his radio in the other...

    My Layout - No Questionaires!

Looks like fun! I'll be looking forward to more pics as the layout progresses. Great idea on the connectors, I wish I had done that. Too late now, but I will replace the connectors whenever I work on a machine. I'm surprised I've never burned myself with falling solder when working under the...

    I can't help myself ...

Good topic. I am completely impulsive with train buying, I'll get something whenever I decide I can't live without it. I know that I am getting into "stage three" where I already have too many cars and locos, but I will still buy an engine if I really like the type and have none like it. I...

    I wish they'd make........

By my byline at the bottom of my posts, you all know what I want. I was wondering what other model railroad items are sought after but don't exist on the market. Joke answers are acceptable.

    Pennsy-izing a Mantua 0-6-0

This probably belongs in the kitbashing section, but here it is. I had a used, very dusty and poorly painted all metal Mantua 0-6-0 laying around and I noticed that it was actually a good little engine, it just needed a little TLC. The short wheelbase of the engine caused it to stall on...
