    Starting Over Decisions

I seriously suggest drawing out the benchwork ahead of time, even if it is going to be a 24" x 48" shelf. Here are some good links to read as you get started: http://www.hrtrains.com/classnotes4.html benchwork theories...

    Starting Over Decisions

Here's a suggestion...If you know what you need in terms of cut lumber (make a plan of the benchwork, not just the track plan), you can get lumber cut at places like home depot when you make your purchase. Get all the legs cut to a uniform length. The get enough pieces to make a simple box...

    back to square one...again

Do a single module with return modules on each end for running. This way, you can break up building your layout into chunks. Get one module complete, then add another between the end loops. Repeat the process again. This way, the track laying portion is kept to a minimum (only a 2x4...

    Scale & Space dilemma

In HO and larger you will be hard pressed to get a loop going in a space 2 feet wide. Might I suggest the following - you should still consider going with a module concept (two feet wide by whatever length) and utilize a reverse loop at each end (to make a "dog-bone" shape). This way, your...

    Scale & Space dilemma

We need to know what you like to do...operations or train running. If you are into operations, I suggest you build two 2x4' HO modules (switching) and seek out a club or Fremo group where you can set up your modules for operating sessions. When at home, you use your modules as switching...

    calling all calipers!

Nobody? I guess I'll have to find a LHS that won't mind me opening up packages and measuring diesels.

I need a track plan book focused on on small spaces

get the book "building a Railroad with personality" - the step by step building of the Jerome and Southwestern by John Olsen (Kalmbach publ.). This was one of the best 4x8 ho RR's Model Railroader did as a project, and included an urban extension off to the side.

    calling all calipers!

I have a strange request regarding needing the measurements of diesel drivers and axle spacing. Does anyone know of any HO diesel two wheel truck switchers (like sw-7's) which have an axle spacing of 11/16 inch and driver diameter of 0.3125"? I'm looking for a particular driveline to fit a...

    corner module

Not sure of the scale/gauge combo, but get yourself a copy of the Ntrak handbook. Lots of plans for modules, including corners. Even if you model another scale, there are good ideas for modules, and ideas for making all of them interconnect. Some basic info can be found on the Ntrak website.

    Scratchbuild wannabe question

In addition to the above mentioned Yahoo group, there are several groups dedicated to Model RR structures, scratchbuilding, etc. Check it out. Even the Gorre and Daphetid yahoo group has plans for some of Mr Allen's famous structures like the engine house and others. There are also FSM and...

    industrial switching

check out the Aug-Dec 2000 issues of MR - they had a 4 part series of building an urban switching layout in HO. It was also in a L shape. Even if you dont copy the plan, it has great step by step instructions and excellent ideas! Greg

Note - I scanned the pages in B&W in order to save the file size. Only the overview drawing and the track plan were in color. Greg

OK guys, here is the link to the scans. All you will find are 5 files. 4 of them are the contest winner plan, plus drawings/info. http://pages.sbcglobal.net/codori/_images/ The 5th item is my trackplan I am working on. GregC

    Starting Over Decisions

I have the images scanned and online. I can either - post them to this message board or give the address where they can be downloaded. It is 4 pages - 2 pages have building drawings, and 1 page is the plan and 1 page is the intro. I think it would be better if everyone downloaded them from...

    Starting Over Decisions

OK, looked at the planning contest. Sorry about the dates, but it was in 1983, not 93. Boy that dates me. I have scanned the pages (4) and will post them to my web site for viewing (too big to email). This contest has some interesting ideas, many of them have been later republished in...

    Starting Over Decisions

If anyone has the issues available, Model Railroader had several track planning contests several years ago. The first one they did was for a 9x8 room in HO as the requirements. The winning plan was great, and many people could benefit from these plans if anyone had them available to scan. I...

    Steam Locomotive Help

Bachmann makes many medium-large locomotives in that price range (and cheaper) which are good starter locos, as long as you get the Spectrum brand. Proto2000 locos are excellent (highly detailed), but pricy (and fragile). These are the two extremes...give us more details as to what you like...

Images from Las Vegas Hobby Visions Trade Show

Yet another N scale steam model maker who hasn't realized that not every RR burned coal out of square tenders (SP anyone? ANYONE??). Why go through the trouble of making 2 cabs, 2 pilots, 2 headlights, but only 1 tender? Still, good to see new products in n scale! Whoo Hoo! GregC

You must subscribe to the yahoo group to access it's files...sorry, should have mentioned this in my first post. Well worth subscribing if you are into HOn3 (there are dozens of train related groups in Yahoo). Gregc
