In one of Benjamin Kline's Pennsylvania Logging books there is a photo with the narrow gauge rail lighter than the standard. I am sure it happened elsewhere. Harold

Beat the high cost of On30

Yes, New Zealand is mentioned in my article. Queensland, Australia and South Africa have 3.5 foot gauge. The new HO Roundhouse mogul can be bashed into a convincing early Sn3.5 mogul. Something we will never see in On30. Our mogul under construction. They were the freight mainstay of...

    Field Grass

Actually faux fur works great being applied in bunches. When cut off it has a "base" to glue and does form a clump. Woodland Scenics grass, wigs and fiber materials like them don't really work well. I have tried them all. The don't stand up. I believe Woodland Scenics has tool now to press their...

Beat the high cost of On30

3-1/2 was the ORIGINAL narrow gauge instituted in India in the 1860's. Yes they had 5'6 at the time and other narrow gauge later. Harold

    Making Logs

Any flat white paint works, it is used to kill the color in the wood and start with a blank palette. I have tried razor saw scraping and have found using coarse sandpaper gives a more random texture. If it works for logs why wouldn't work for trees. Harold

    Plastic VS wood

An Atlas HO trackside shanty I think plastic is more versatile than wood for model wood and the time to make it textured is made up by the fact that it goes together so quickly. Visit: Make Realistic Weathered Wood Thank you if you visit Harold

    Sn3 conversoins

My layout was featured in the Kalmbach's Model Railroad Planning 2007. I had my first article in the March 2005 Railroad Model Craftsman on making grass from faux fur. That article is on the website at: Faux Fur Grass for Realistic Scenery Originally the layout was On30. I found that I...

    Sn3 conversoins

I am doing Sn3.5 in the 1870's which is a whole different animal than Sn3. Very few people are making conversions in Sn3. Too bad, S scale is the perfect layout size. All those coarse details you see on HO layouts become the right size in S and all those details that O scale needs can be omitted...
