    Track Question

For HO scale, you really don't want to go any smaller than Code 83 due to the size of wheel flanges on HO-scale locomotives and rolling stock. Any smaller than Code 83 and you risk the flanges hitting things like the molded tie plates or fouling the turnouts. So basically for HO you have only...

Final result of caulking fun - test photo shoot

Miles: I was surprised how well the caulking held everything together. As Mountain Man says, you can indeed pull up the cork roadbed or the track by using a putty knife fairly easily, but that latex caulking holds on pretty darn good. :thumb: The biggest benefit I'd say would be the time...

Final result of caulking fun - test photo shoot

Over the past weekend, I found some free time to experiment with using latex caulking to lay roadbed, track, AND ballast all in one shot, described in this thread: http://www.the-gauge.com/showthread.php?t=25413 Anyway, the commuter station module has come far enough for me to start taking...

    Hello everybody, another new guy

Downloading stuff can be dangerous yes. You never know if what you are downloading has been infected by viruses or is intentionally-written malware designed to steal your personal information off your computer or crash it or whatever. That's why whenever possible, you should download stuff...

    Hello everybody, another new guy

Just download any of the 100's of graphics utilities available at any of the the shareware sites (cnet.com, tucows.com, etc.). I recommend IrfanView. This one lets you resize images as well as let you choose how much file compression to use (so you can squish a Jpeg file down to below 70K so...

    Who Are The Mechanics Here?

Moral of the story: Caveat emptor-- It pays to research a bit before buying something. tooth1 I also learned it the hard way... Back in the 1980s, I must have spent $100 on a POS Botchmann pancake motor Amtrak E60CP before I realized I could have gotten a much better-running engine for a...

Affixing ballast & Track - Fun with Latex caulk

Yea I've been looking at photos of Metro North stations and it seems I need pretty thin beams and structural members.. Stuff that's like 6 HO-scale inches wide (which translates to 1.75mm!). Heck, I'm not even sure if Plastruct or Evergreen make structural beam shapes that small. :( Anyway...

Feight train with multiple powered engines

Sweet! :thumb: If you got the undecorated dummies, you should be good to go with the painting.. Just cut masking tape and start masking the model, fire up your airbrush and paint on the red and black. If the dummies you got has factory paint jobs, you will need to grab some Chameleon paint...

    Images Replicas decals

Hi Patrick, You can try emailing them directly... I've gotten answers to my questions about their products this way before: transit@imagesreplicas.com Ask them if they can email you a larger JPeg picture of the decals or ask if it is appropriate for the R17s. Good luck! :thumb:

Affixing ballast & Track - Fun with Latex caulk

I hope it works out for you! :thumb: Now that I got the track and ballast out of the way, I just have to finish building the station.. Which is turning out to be a lot more difficult than I thought because scratchbuilding materials are rather difficult to find in my area.. Seems like nobody...

    having feelings about this hobby

If you feel the need to pause for a while, that's perfectly normal. Redirect your energy and perhaps take up a fresh new challenge-- Take up a new sport, learn a new hobby, improve your career, join the Peace Corps, join the Marine Corps, whatever. If and when the bug bites you again, the...

Rail Joiners for my Flex Track?

The rail joiners work with both Code 100 and 83 rail. If you don't like the size of the joiners, you can always cut them in half with a Xuron nipper. :thumb: Good luck!

Affixing ballast & Track - Fun with Latex caulk

Heya Ron, The latex caulking I used is DAP's Dynaflex 230 (bought it at Home Depot), used for caulking building exteriors. It's a gooey paste when extruded with a caulking gun. Once it sets (takes a few hours), it becomes a rubbery solid (which has only a little bounce to it). It anchors the...

Affixing ballast & Track - Fun with Latex caulk

Photo # 5: I then used a 1-inch paint brush to brush away the loose ballast (which by the way can be saved for use again later on). I gotta say I'm pleased with how it looked and how easy it was! Before, I used to ballast using an eyedropper to apply the Elmers/wet water mix. It was tedious...

Affixing ballast & Track - Fun with Latex caulk

Photo # 4: Sprinkling on the ballast. I used Woodland Scenics' fine ballast. The grains are all about 0.5mm wide, which translates to rocks about 2 inches in diameter in HO. It's actually a bit oversize, but I think it looks good enough. The ballast is heaped on generously, then I use...

Affixing ballast & Track - Fun with Latex caulk

Photo # 2 and # 3: Laying down a bead of the latex caulking, and spreading it out with a plastic buttering knife. The trick here is to make sure the caulking is REAL THIN. If the layer is too thick, it gets squished between the ties and leaves no space for the ballast.

Affixing ballast & Track - Fun with Latex caulk

I am building a small commuter rail station module for my layout, representing a fictitious stop in New York State's Hudson River valley. I heard all sorts of wonderful things about latex caulking, so I figure I experiment with it on this module to affix track and ballast. It turned out to be...
