    Upgrading couplers

I had to shave the little bumps off the sides of the #5s for a certain passenger car I installed them on. But with an exacto, it was no problem. Slow and steady wins the... non-bloody fingertips. After that, it was dead simple. I used a self tapping #256 screw and it worked great. George

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

Which kind of Athearn connector? Are these the old Athearn or new-ish Athearn connectors?

    Repowering my Athearn Loco

I had 2 Athearns that ran silky smooth and 2 Athearns that ran noisy and rough. I thought I would just swap shells, but the 2 that ran smooth were the silver Sante Fe and the 2 I wanted were black NP. So, I had to swapped motors. Fixed the issue and now I have two very smooth running NPs...

    Joined a club!!!

Hey Wildcat I joined a club here in Caldwell, ID this past summer and it has been a learning experience. I am really happy to have found The Gauge, but to get hands on learning is really exciting. Here is what one of our members did for our site. Nothing fancy, we don't have our own domain...

    Weekly Photo Fun 11/23

And here are the last shots from the depths of the, as of now, unnamed mountain. I think this mountain is taking about just as long as mother nature to build.

    Weekly Photo Fun 11/23

Here are my weekly pics from this long weekend. Adding 1 passenger car a month is going to make this a long project, but should be well worth it. Dang Tripod slipped Didn't catch the Tripod Tilt until after this one!

Nov 16, 2007 Weekly Foto Phun!

I dont know if these should be posted here as they don't contain locos or rolling stock, but they do contain stuff for my layout. I followed Gary's tutorial and came up with these: Here is a hint: Do NOT use your wife's green floral arrangement doo mah hickeys as a base for holding your...

Deano & Steve - I love the pueblo in the rock. That is just great work. And all the extras on the engines is really nice too. You two guys, and a lot of others here on the forum, are setting the bar I hope to one day achieve. Great work all around! :inw: George

Steve, Nice F3 and very nice butter knife! Your butter knife even has the steam generators. They are missing on my F9s, or so I was told by the rivet counter at my club. Did you add/paint any extra goodies to your engines? I am thinking of getting the Walther's F series Super Detail Kit...

Nice pics so far! Here is the beginning of my scenicking... Here we have a noticeable seam, which going to be a road. I just wanted to see if I could "grass" it down. Nope. Needed a road thru that area anyway. And here we have a little side by side action. Ok, posing, no action. I only...

Hey!, or should that be Hay!

Hiya folks. Before I get too involved in my question, be assured that photos are coming. Wife took the camera to work with her, am going to see her at noon and post them then. That being said: Can I use chaff from my hay barn on my layout? It's going to be Autumn in 1955 on my layout and I...

    Do you build a Layout

Not at all! There is an old trick N gauge folks use of putting their layout on a hollow door (35 bucks at any Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) then putting folding table legs on it. I have seen the same thing done for the Xmas Season. The table legs don't have to be the standard height. The fellow I...

    Funny Ha-Ha

For the past month or so, I have been retreating out to my layout in the garage 2 to 3 times a week after the wee babes are in bed. I always tell my wife what I am going to work on that night. (ie I'm going to be laying some track tonight, I'm going to do some wiring... that kind of thing.)...

Weekly Photo Phun Week of Nov. 9

I didn't see anyone posting yet... sorry if I jumped the gun. I have 3 pics for this week. This first one, if you squint right, you can make out the mountain complete with trees, rockface, portals... ok, maybe you better do more than squint. Here is a close up of one of my fright work...

GAAA! I killed it!! (Lighting issue.)

Ok, so. I go to the hardware store and pick up 2 florescent lamps to hang in the garage over my layout. Put the bulbs in, which didn't come with the lamps :x and turn em on. What happened? Oh, they lit up my layout alright. Lit it up like some freak show. Everything had a blue-ish tint and...

    Mainline spacings

Uh... standards and measures..? I have a spur that runs for a bit right next to my main line. I put them as close as the foam roadbed would allow and the trains miss each other. Not, you know, by alot... but they do miss. Don't know how I'm going to ballast that yet... George

    Red Letter Day

Many, many times. I had to be sure that this is the layout. You can see where I ripped up parts of the previous layout. I would send a train around the layout while working on other parts. Isolators come in REAL handy for that. I let my sante fe passengers run around it for an hour last...

    Red Letter Day

You asked, here they are. My camera skills are still not great, so please bear with me. I am doing some heavy reading today online about my camera and how to do better. You can see the mountain in the corner. I am putting a crossover under there so folks will be surprised when the train goes...
