    N Trak module done!

Detail shots, please.:thumb: Or are there some in a thread somewhere?

    Chrome

I've used Bare Metal Foil back in my model car building days. It does work pretty well, once you get the hang of it. One sheet goes a loooong way even on 1/24 scale. My only criticism was that the adhesive on the back would dry out over time, though at the rate I used it that was probably a...

    My New Layout

What's not to like? :) I think you've packed a lot of use into that space without it being cluttered. Nice job! :thumb:

Some nut in HO forum posted

I did my part, and added to the already huge N family. :D

Do YOU remember your first layout attempt

I'm still working on my first attempt. Ver 5.1 still being tinkered with. Thought of tearing the entire thing down and starting over today. :curse: Actually, my first solo attempt was an HO layout that consisted of 2 ovals...never could figure out how to get the current to flow...

    Foam as benchwork?

Another point to consider with foam...it will warp. I've noticed this just in the pieces I'm using to build scenery. Will vary with material thickness but if you check them at the Home Depot where they are stored vertically you can usually see warp setting in. Reinforcement would definately be...

Paper towels vs. Woodland Scenics cloth

I remember reading a tutorial thread (I think it was on here) about how to use paper towels and Hydrocal for scenery. I can't seem to find it now. Looking through the Walthers catalog last night for something else, I see WS offers a pre-made cloth you just soak in water and drape over...

What to shoot for in a layout design?

Well, this design still isn't set in stone, but it's pretty much as I presented it. I'm just now putting everything down on the foam. Reverse loop is a bad phrase for me, I hate wiring and anything related to it so have intentionally avoided that. I've had plenty of opportunities to add a...

Your opinions of rolling stock brands

Have not tried it on rail cars, but I've always used Easy Off oven cleaner to remove paint from model car kits built by others. Removes enamel but won't hurt the plastic. Messy, and wear gloves.

What to shoot for in a layout design?

Oh, that. That's a mockup because I didn't have any more turnouts. The siding with the 2 missing turnouts has been scrapped. I'll instead put a siding in that goes to another industry. The missing turnout across from that siding goes to another industry.

    What is your favorite RailRoads?

I haven't travelled enough to probably appreciate them all, but: Pennsy: GG1's! East Broad Top Ma & Pa (very close to me) Western Maryland (my new love...how did I miss this one all these years?) The Reading was my local road while growing up, so I have some affinity for it. Can't say...

    Oil Depot...

Looks good to me. If the oil stains bother you, maybe a little sawdust there for some "oil-dri" to make it environmentally friendly. ;)

What to shoot for in a layout design?

Thanks for the critiques so far. :) The S curve I know is a technical no-no, but in testing it has not been a problem with the longest train I can put together, so  . I really like the visual look of the non-parallel lines through that side and want to stick some structures in the...

    Different makes of ground foam

"Zip texturing". Yikes, that was like voodoo to me when I read about it 'back in the day'. Never did try it. Nothing wrong with using either WS or your own concoction. For a little layout like mine, I'll stick with the WS stuff. Bigger layouts may need a different solution simply based on cost...

What to shoot for in a layout design?

At long last! How to make an oval not look like an oval. :p The piers are temporary and are just to show the probable rise I'll build from foam. Yes, it's too steep and will have to be longer. Didn't have enough piers. The line at the upper left that crosses under will be the...

    New to N Gauge

Chessie, welcome to N gauge. I'm new at it myself. Here is a site I found very helpful when it came to shopping for motive power: N scale engine page I set myself a pretty tight budget, and have purchased most of my stuff on Ebay. Most people want the latest and greatest, so the older stuff...

    Those smoking Alcos!

I recently read a funny Alco story in an old railfan type magazine. These fellas picked up a train with a tired old Alco of some sort in the consist. As they were rolling along, the Alco caught fire on all the sludge that had built up under the hood. Flames were licking out through the cracks...

What to shoot for in a layout design?

Update: I think I may finally have a trackplan I can live with. :thumb: Also got a digital camera for the holiday which I hope will make photo uploads simpler than using my job equipment. But, the computer must also go down temporarily for some upgrades. Will hope to post a picture by the end of...
