    Bachmann Climax!

Got mine in the mail last week (ordered it in 2002). Gave it a test run - very nice !! Ran around the layout at about 9-10 mph and could have easily run slower if I'd wanted it to. Surprisingly heavy by the way. Haven't done extensive testing, just a break in run forward and then in reverse, but...

    Let's talk grades and radius!

Well...in the prototype, I don't think there would be much difference between an 0-6-0 and a 2-8-8-2 as far as how steep a grade they could go up. Neither could go up the very steep (10-11%) grades a geared engine like a Shay or Climax could. The 0-6-0 could go around a much sharper radius curve...

    Too many choices--very confusing

I hate when that happens !! BTW I guess when they first tested it at speed, they hadn't calculated the force of water and air being forced into the tender and blew the back off the tender.

    Too many choices--very confusing

It sounds like you've been reading about the Broadway Limited 4-6-4 NYC Hudson. It's available in several versions. Block and Roman are different types of lettering 'fonts', I believe NYC used Roman then later in the steam era switched to Block. On some of it's lines, the NY Central used...

    Indentify needed!

All except the first and last (Jell-O and Big Pine) are probably based on real cars. PLD 1 - Walthers first decal diagram book from 1942 - had decals for Baby Ruth, Gerber, Heinz 57 (Heinz had many many different styles of 'billboard' reefers) and Old Dutch. GN had many flatcars too. Now without...

    Making them run...

I believe there is a book out there about Athearn locomotives/trains, how to maintain them, curing common problems etc. Maybe check a local hobby shop??

    Passenger car name change

Some people would say you don't have to do that, but I've always sprayed the whole car with glosscote and dullcote too, just to be sure the entire car showed the same finish on it.

    hello! My first question

Well just a thought, you could maybe go to a model RR fleamarket (or check Ebay) for a Walthers HO catalogue from the period you were buying the loco's (or a little before that, since you were buying them used.) I suspect that would help at least get some of the more common ones (Athearn, MDC...

Anyone know where I can buy HO scale birds?

WOW !! Those birds are amazing, I'm going to have to get some of those loons for my layout. They are our (Minnesota) state bird afterall (though most people assume it's the mosquito) !!

    Passenger car name change

Yes to the blue heavyweights !! I've seen pics, I think Rivarossi or somebody offers (or offered??) heavyweight cars in Wabash blue. Look pretty neat. (BTW even that pic of the old Wabash car I posted earlier looks like it was blue.) Probably wouldn't be hard to paint cars that scheme, even...

    Track question

Good point, usually I grab the head of the nail with a blunt-nose pliers and just push it thru into the plywood. Unless you hit a really hard bit of wood it is usually pretty easy.

Any Broadway Limited Gurus out there?

The Hudson being their first loco does seem to have some problems with programming that later models don't. (My USRA mike was quite easy to program compared to my hudson.) Could be that shutdown feature that toopoor mentioned, could check the BLI website for their DCC manual. BTW there are...

    Starting Over Decisions

I've never really cared for cork, I use 'ribbonrail' upsom board roadbed (you can get it thru Walthers catalog). It's pre-cut in straight and curves from I think 15" to 48" radius. Nice thing about that is that you can lay out your trackplan fullsize with the roadbed sections before laying track...

can you cut turnouts or switchs

As long as you don't cut anything between the points (the moving parts of the turnout) and the frog, you can shorten turnouts by cutting them. Just be sure if you are shortening the cuved leg that if you attach another turnout to it, that you aren't creating a bad S-curve. Otherwise should be...

    Track question

I would go with the track nails, if you glue the track down now, it will make it harder to make changes / additions later.

    Passenger car name change

What kind of locomotive were you planning to power the train with?? I'm sure in steam days (20's-30's) Wabash used pullman green (everybody did back then!!), probably didn't go to the blue until they started running streamliners. Just thinking if you were thinking of diesels, it might look a...

    Passenger car name change

BTW you don't state what era you're modelling, I see Con-Cor offers 72' Wabash passenger cars pre-decorated but they are post-war (streamlined) cars I believe. Rivarossi does / did offer fullsize heavyweights in Wabash colors and lettering. p.s. You might want to research the Wabash a little...

    Passenger car name change

You know floquil makes Pullman green paint in aerosol spray cans, you could just get undecorated cars and a can of gray primer and Pullman green and paint the cars yourself, then spray em with glosscote, put on the decals, and seal it all in with dullcote. All available in spray cans. I know the...

    Diesel Suggestions

Well then besides the ones I suggested which would be right for that time, you could also look at Atlas S-2's and - if they ever really do come out - Broadway Limited NW-2's with sound and DCC.
