ModelArt F117 Desert Storm 1/48 scale

Wings are glued to the bottom half of the fuselage. Then the fuselage and wing stiffeners (parts 13-18) are glued to the fuselage. I didn't glue the stiffeners to the wing skins so the skins could float during assembly.

ModelArt F117 Desert Storm 1/48 scale

This version is not significantly different from the American Flag version so its almost like building the same model twice.

The 2 parts at the top of the photo below are for the bomb bay and the 3 parts at the bottom are for the landing gear wells. Here's what the bottom half of the fuselage, the bomb bay and the landing gear wells look like when constructed and ready to be glued together. The piece running down...

I wish: Stargate F-302 and Goa'uld Death Glider

I am a big fan of interesting looking aircraft and spacecraft (real and fictional). The tv series Stargate had 2 very cool craft; the F-302 and the Goa'uld Death Glider. There is a very simple paper model of each in the "Resource" section, but I would love to see someone do a more detailed model...

ModelArt F117 Desert Storm 1/48 scale

Recently, I did a build thread on the Modelart F117 American Flag version in 1/72 scale. I wanted to add a 1/48 or 1/50 scale model of the F117 to my collection, but I couldn't find one. However, thanks to the 2-window arrangement of the parts on ModelArt 1/72 models, I was able to print out a...

Build: Modelart F117 American Flag 1/72 scale

Installing the landing gear and doors completes the model. I managed to build the probe on the tip of the nose with the cardstock parts provided, but the cardstock parts for the other 3 probes were too small and asymmetrical for me to shape correctly. So, I used 3 pins (the same kind of pins...

No I didn't. Sounds like a very good idea. I will try it next time.

I often use toothpicks to strengthen landing gear on 1/32 scale aircraft models, but something much thinner is needed for 1/72 scale. I printed the leg covers on regular 20-pound printer paper, because I couldn't get cardstock to neatly wrap around the pins.

Build: Modelart F117 American Flag 1/72 scale

Building the landing gear follows the standard procedure, but the parts are relatively small. The instructions suggest using thin wire or pins to strengthen the legs of the gear. I used straight pins my wife uses for sewing. The oversized head on the pins made handling much easier. The patterns...

The nose piece, vertical stabilizers and landing parachute cowling (located in between the stabilizers) are installed. The position for the stabilizers and cowling are marked with white lines, which are covered up when the parts are in place.

I just realized some people may not know this is a model of a real F117 as micarogers mentioned. The colorful paint job is not fictional.

Dry fitting the upper and lower halves of the fuselage is highly recommended before gluing them together. I started at the front. I positioned and glued the front edge of the upper about 17 cm from the tip of the lower. After the front was thoroughly dry, I glued down the first tab on the right...

Build: Modelart F117 American Flag 1/72 scale

The upper portion of the fuselage is constructed by gluing together parts 21-29 in numerical order (from front to back). Doing so was easier than I expected. The next step is to mate the upper and lower halves of the fuselage together. There is a white line that runs from the front of the...

Build: Modelart F117 American Flag 1/72 scale

Here's what the printed side of the bottom of the fuselage looks like. Note the wings have a faceted shape with several flat surfaces, which is created by scoring the lines printed on the top and bottom of the wings. The engines vents (parts 19 and 20 - the 2 black parts to the right of the...

Build: Modelart F117 American Flag 1/72 scale

Each side (top and bottom) of the wings have a 12mm long slit in the tips. The slits are closed with the glue tabs provided. This allows the wing tips to be formed into a chisel-type shape.

Enlarge ModelArt 1/72 scale models to 1/48 scale easily

Modelart 1/72 scale model files are organized so there is 2 sections per page. Enlarging the parts pages to 1/48 (or 1/50 scale) is a simple matter of adjusting a couple settings on the .pdf print screen using the current version of the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. On the print screen (as shown...

Build: Modelart F117 American Flag 1/72 scale

This model was printed by a laser printer at my local Office Depot store. I would like to print all my models that way, but I found the printing has a tendency to crack and/or flake off when the parts are scored and/or bent.

Build: Modelart F117 American Flag 1/72 scale

Once the underside of the wings were dry, it was time to add several strengthening parts (which I previously laminated to post board) to the unprinted side of the fuselage's bottom. The positions for parts 9, 13, 16 and 17 (indicated by the green arrows the photo) were apparent after studying...

Build: Modelart F117 American Flag 1/72 scale

All 3 landing gear bays are constructed and glued to the unprinted side of the fuselage's bottom. The front edges of parts 1 and 2, which are black in color, are folded over and glued to the unprinted side of the bottom. The front portion of the fold over lays flat and the back portion is raised...
