Bring on the Kaiju's!

Ok, I started Striker Eureka from the movie Pacific Rim over the weekend.

Let us just set the mood first....

the template is from paper-replika, and as usual for Julius' work, a very nice template to work with!

I started with the recessed parts which came together nicely



The I attached the flanks and the upper part of the chest to those pieces;



And stuck them together!



The lower part of the chest was then attached, then the back



Then, I managed to drop my knife into the body :banghead: while trying to knock out a dent which resulted in some "open surgery" (i.e.: cutting open the back) to get my knife out.

I didn't have the camera nearby while I was building the head, but, here is the completed head attached







I'm going to see how it looks before I choose how much greebling (if any) I do

According to Julius it will stand 60cm tall, I've made a stand which would add 2cm to the overall height.

What kind of paper are you using?
It looks like a matte but what G/2

Its normal 80gsm It should be fine with the design being very "boxy". Also every other model I've built from paper-replika has been fine

80 gsm? That's pretty fragile. I'm staying tuned nevertheless!

It's one thing to see the renders of a model, but, to see the actual build...So much better!
Pacific Rim is one of my all time favorite movies. I cant wait to see the rest of the build progress.

I have to admit, the 80 is a bit flimsy, but I'm going to fill the bigger parts with the ultimate internal support substance.

Bucket loads of bog roll.

And I was mucking around with the camera last night...

If you spray the inside with a layer of construction foam, it will stiffen up tremendously, and all you need is a thin 1/8th in layer. Looking good!!

Revell-Fan - What weight do you build with?

I use 160 gsm paper. I has always served me very well with all of my builds, and I really hope it will be sufficient with the beast I'll be tackling soon.

So, another weekend, some more building done;

I finished the front of the chest portion;



And does anyone spot my nice new craft knife?! A gift from my birthday, it's very nice....

Then I attached the torso, now the "six pack" section is a bit long so I'm going to wait & see how the hips connect in case there's any trimming required.



Then I started on the "coat tails" (dunno what else to call them.... ) Here they are completed



And then attached



And here you can see the "surgery site" from when I dropped my knife in the body. (And my son did the same thing!) Fortunatley there's a nice big piece that will cover the "wound"

Got some time in yesterday and ....



He is Healed! Hallelujah!

Admittedly this part would have been easier to attach before the "coat tails" :banghead:

Then the bit that sits behind the head





And attached





So, all that remains is to build & attach the "rocket packs" then the torso is done.
