What glue would you use then, in this sort of build ??
I'm thinking ahead in my current project, and don't want to have warping, because of water based glue, (which I am currently using,) when I attempt the command sphere of the Discovery....:cry:

Try universal glue from UHU; the main disadvantage is that glue which is not water-based smells which is not very healthy, so when you use it make sure that your working area gets enough fresh air to compensate the effects. In addition, some people (like me
) may be allergic to it.When you use water-based glue make sure that you use it sparingly; apply it gently with a brush instead of making a fat streak out of the tube. I experienced that the amount of water in the glue I am using is rising when the tube is gets empty, so if your glue is too "wet" just switch to a new (full) tube.
Here are some pics of the flight display stand. I created a mountain base which was heavily influenced by the mountain of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". The "rock" consists of two parts on one sheet. The texture was made with TheGimp and then projected onto a stylized rock made in SketchUp. I will add a separate page to the package so that you may recolour it according to your needs, i. e. add a brown wash or rotate the colours to get a more deserted or alien look with less green.

For the stand, you could use sheets of clear plastic (like from some of the clear plastic IKEA packaging) and roll it into what ever size of tube you need.

And here it is, Dr Zee's antigrav ship. Despite my initial worries the final model has indeed a fine size, I don't find it too big any more. If you look closely you'll see that I was able to "beat out" the warping a bit by cutting into the outer edge of the warped parts and taping the two ends together so that they overlap a bit. An easy and effective solution. I even had some time for a little Gimp magic (last pic). I'm certain that a version equipped with LEDs would become an even more impressive display piece. :thumb:
This is the 25th model I have designed. As I said before I made this model for one reason only, to learn how to apply a texture to an uneven surface in SketchUp. Even though there is a little error I was unable to fix I must say that the result pleases me very much. It was a fun project which taught me a great deal of handling textures. One of the main disadvantages of SketchUp and Pepakura is that they do not accept texture maps above 1024x1024 pixels. I worked around that limitation and rose texture and export quality by not using one single map but four individual maps with max resolution each. The result is much crisper and cleaner. BTW, the procedures I learned here will be essential for the next project by me and Rhaven (yes, we are teaming up again!). I've sent the kit to him for approval and asked him to add it to the BSG downloads section. Till then, enjoy the pics!

Very COOL! Neat looking saucer design. Is it just me or looking down on it does it remind you of the mother ship from "V"? I wonder with a little redesign and a change of textures could you create the "V" ship?

As you might know, I am making the V blaster. One of the first design ideas for the stand was to create a little mothership as a base. I have begun modeling a simplified version of it, but then noticed that the base would become larger than the blaster which wouldn't be good (it should be a model of the blaster and not of the mothership with a blaster on top). The studio model was very small, even smaller than the fighters and transport ships of the Visitors. I still have my original SketchUp file and surely could rework certain areas to get a nice mothership papercraft. Interested???

Hello folks!
You might wonder what caused me to get back to a project which was completed two years ago. Well, I'll tell you. When I designed this model I only had two tiny blurry pictures of the top and bottom of the studio model and some screenshots from the series to work with. A few months ago new pictures popped up at www.byyourcommand.net . They revealed that the top of the saucer / the bulge was much higher than anticipated. That made me revise the kit. This also gave me the chance to change the way of assembly to make the build easier (I hope). Now it basically consists of three hull pieces which are stacked on top of each other (instead of one huge hull piece which could cause some trouble when the top part is attached):
Each segment features its own set of formers.
I'll keep you posted.

This model is too COOOOOL! Have you thought about making an angled cylinder with the bottom wider than the top out of recycled clear blister pack instead of the rod. It would look like a force beam holding the ship up. You could paint it with clear model car paint or use clear sticker material and print it on the ink jet. Now I need to build two, one for my Galactica collection and one to light up and hang over the X-Files action figure display base I'm working on. Mulder & Skully standing in front of the Area 51 fence and the Alien standing behind the fence and them.

Black was my colour of choice because you always saw the ship at night and a black rod would fit in that scheme. Of course you may do whatever you want to improve the kit. RB is doing a test of the new shapes soon. You may practise with the previous version which is still available in the Resource section or at www.stevespaper.com .
