To ALL HO SCALE Steel Mill Modeler's Out There!!!!

My son and I have the equipment to do a steel complex with 4 blast furnaces from conerstones first steel mill called The Works .Now that they
have come out with some new items we plan on adding one more blast furnace add two more coke ovens to the four we have ,one more rolling mill to the two , and one more electric furnace to the two already here.
But I have a problem that maybe you fellas can help me with.wall1

Conerstone has come up with a new building for the Ashland Iron and Steel Mill and it's called the Blower Engine House .
My problem , does each Blast Furnace have it's own Blower Engine House or not ?
How does the Blower Engine House fit in. If any one knows let me hear from ya.:wave::wave:
I have the book by Freytag but it does'nt cover this subject much.
 
Sorry HO King, but I cant help you there.

I read in MR today that the next model comming out is the Hullet loader, I cant imagine the ore dock will be far behind!

I'm going to say yes. The blower house is designed to blow air into the furnace. You might be able to get away with having one blower house between 2 furnaces though.

Your right Walthers says that the ore dock will be in Feb 17 2009 .It cost a little more than it did the first time but I'd say well worth it.:thumb:+

I had bought a ore ship model ,plastic ,water line ,6' by 8'' to go with the conerstone water front series to add to the steel mill setting but I needed some way of unloading this vessel so I bought 3 water front cranes .There vary impressive but know they may be used as stand a lones because I think 2 or 3 Hullets might be more up to date .What do you think ?

Thankyou .That maybe a good Idea .5 blowers may be quite expensive.They do sell piping kits to go with it so sitting one house between two furnaces makes more $ence

I was looking at some of your pics of your layouts . In one word WOW
the smoothness and the eveness of your paint work of your structures and how you placed your details good job . Do you have any other plans for your layout ?

HOLY COW MAN!!!! :eek: :eek: :eek: Now that MUST be impressive!!! Do you have any pics to share with us? I plan to build a large steel mill with the new releases from Walthers, but NOTHING even close to what you have lol

Im also going to agree with Josh, i think you could get away with 1 Blower House for 2 Furnaces and use a piping kit for each furnace to connect to the blower house....

Ive never seen the walthers ore boat. Ill need to look. I plan on building one someday. I model the DMIR in Northern MN, and their whole system revolves around their dock facilities, so I NEED to get an ore dock. Id love to add a hullet if they had a prototype for them on the DMIR but they didnt. I still intend on getting one before they go out ofproduction again. You definately have a good idea using them to unload your ship.

I lived not to far from the neighborhood hobby store and the owner and I were good friends . My son amd I did so much shopping there He gave us a 10% discount.I bought a lot of stuff and when I was buying thins were cheap.Athearn locos going for $26 , Buildings $10 to $20 so when my son and I decided to do something we decided to go big .One day Ill give you guys a run down of what we have .

We don't have the Mill up yet and good thing with the new stuff coming out but here is what we have 4 Coke Ovens,2 Elec Furnaces,2 Rolling Mills,4 Blast Furnaces,3 Rotary Dumps,1 Valcan Manufacturing,44 50' Coil Cars,18 Hot metal Cars,30 Slag Cars,84 Coke Cars,200 100 ton Coal Hoppers,24 Ore Cars,5 Marklin 32 wheel Hot Metal Bottle Cars,2 State Tool and Die Open Top Hot Metal Cars, 2 75 Ton Kling Hot Metal Car Pollock,20 40' Gondolas,15 53' Thrall Mill Gondolas,and there is more.We have constructed two layouts in the past (Hard shell and dry wall mud and real dirt and rock ) It was so real it fooled our indoor cats. They used the mountains like a kitty litter box . Nine months of work I could have killed them.The second one was trail an error new things came out that was the testing ground.All the equipment we have now is for the granddaddy of them all 100' x 50' layout .Well since I have talk this long I might as well tell you all of what we have collected in 15 years so here we go.

400 Structures,1,240 Freight Cars,500 Engines,312 (assorted ) passenger cars,Road Names.
Great Northern(Empire Builder),AM Trak,Santa Fe, New York Central, Penn, Erie,Sou,Erie Lack, CNW (Passenger and Commuter) IC,Great Northern,
Freight Norfolk Southern.My Wife says thank God I don't buy much anymore .Between me ,my son and some firedepartment and police department friends we will be building one whale of a layout and I promise pictures.:p:p:p

Thankyou . The ship model I bought was not buy Walthers it was by a company known as Bearco Marine custom build ships (www.bearcomarine.com) They have two kits you can build and paint yourself.:wave:

Oh I did'nt get my Ore ship from Walthers I bought the kit from a company named Bearco marine custom model ship builders (www.bearcomarine.com) They have two kits you can build and paint yourself.

:eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: Now thats a TON of stuff that i wish i had LOL. For my steelmill, it wont be anything near as many buildings, and it will be set in the modern era with modern Rolling Stock and equipment. I need to reserve a few of the kits :mrgreen: :thumb:

Thats a very good Idea . We started that way .I enjoyed the hobby by starting at a size I could afford reserving kits,building,adding, building,and adding again just like you and everyone else here. If I had been a millionare and could have done it all at one time the dream would have been finished in a second, instead starting slow and enjoying the hobby as I went along the dream will last a life time.:wave:

There is another way and a lot cheaper if you want to take a chance.
My son did this with a model ship he built .A ore ship is a very large vessal
but a very simple design . Go to your library or pull up on the internet a simple design like the Edmond Fitzgerald then go to your hobby store and buy plastic materials and you can build it yourself for little of the cost and beleave me it will be somthing you will really be proud of.:thumb:
Another thing which makes that real cool you can also design your own vessal like a fellow did in one of the past issues of Model Railroad.
Good Luck your Ore Dock is going to need some company and your ore cars are going to need to unload somewhere so work can go onsign1

It depends on a lot of things - I don't necessarily find buying a well-detailed model always costs more than building one, though building one stretches the cost over a longer time of model building (which I enjoy):

Little bags of detail parts - cheap, yes, but $2 and $3 starts adding up when you need a lot of 'em.

Specific shapes in styrene or brass - if you only need 1" of material and have to buy an 18" length, the costs start adding up (of course, then you have plenty for the next project...)

As your building skills improve, you find certain limitations and ways to expand capabilities, in the way of new (or used) tools. Maybe a small mill, and a lathe to go with it, a shear, a laser cutter....

Good breaking it down.I agree with you all the way .One more thing I'd like to add is the simplicity of a design of your own gives you a great deal of a lead way on your exspenses.
Have you got any projects in the works?:wave:
