My first Eve Online ship

That is a cool design! Where can I download it?

I have a suggestion for the base: cut a hole in the underside of each of the columns(?) and insert a sharpened dowel into them to cut additional holes through whatever bulkheads are in the structure. Go slow and be careful not to grip too tightly or to force the dowel. Just let the point do all the work, spinning it around and around between your fingers to make an impromptu drilling action. When that's done drill similarly sized holes in the same locations in a wooden plaque or other block of solid wood and glue two dowels the same size as the "drill" into the base, and after those are dry slip the model on the base.

Thats a good suggestion with the dowels. I actually used the same concept when attaching the fins to the main hull as well as attaching each section of the fins to one another. There are a lot of popsicle sticks and toothpicks underneath the surface as well.


I want to try and cut it as little as possible, but I might use that suggestion if nothing else seems stable. I came up with an idea of making a cradle out of thick gauge wire and see if that lets it stand without being too unstable.

Another thought was to try and use Plexiglas as a base, but that seems like a lot more hassle.



As for the design: I believe I grabbed it off the Eve Online forums. There is a guy that posted 2 models and then disappeared off the face of the earth. I plan on making his other kit next.

There are no instructions so I managed to extract the model from Eve Online itself and import it into Pepakura to get a rough idea of "what goes where".
 
I am working on a number of Eve ships I found interesting. I still need to build them to make sure everything is kosher before I post them here.

But here are a couple of the ships I have in the works:

I'm not really sure what sort of copyright permission I need to get either for these so I am a little reluctant to start distributing them until I know what I am doing for sure.

Sorry to say, but when I go out to the Eve-Online forum to download the ships, only the Heron has a downloadable content. Both the Apocalypse and the Rifter give me unopenable 5Kb files. Any other location for those? Or any other way to get them?

Those ships look like great paper subjects! Don't worry about the copyright thing; as long as you're not making any profit they don't mind distributing the model, IIRC.

That lower left-hand ship looks like Prince Xizor's Virago from Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

Looks like you've definitely got the hang of it, they're looking pretty good, nice work on the Heron too.

I know it's not one of the more interesting looking ships from the game, but I've always wanted a model of the Caldari Navy Raven as it was the ship I flew the most before I lost interest in the game (which was before the new graphics engine, not sure what it looks like now)... I'd love to see a model of it some day and all my previous attempts to make my own from the game files with pepakura were dismal failures. :cry:
 
I started a Caldari Hookbill but left it about half done in Pepakura. Way more complicated than it seems.

The raven is a ship I have often overlooked. I might take a second glance at it now that you mention it.

I imagine I will try them all eventually. :)
 
Hey pupumonkey, nice effort on the models. I have been racking my brain of late with the development side of the models, though I cant sem to get it right. I'd given up!
I have managed to get the textured models into pepakura, but when it comes to unfolding, I'm stumped. Check out my post here.
The models I have exported to pep are the new "Trinity " DX9 models.
 
The unfolding is a mess, frankly. That's why I am waiting to make sure they actually work until I post them.

I remember seeing your pep unfolds a while back, but I am learning that it is almost easier for me if I clean up the unfold myself before assembly since that gives me a better idea of what goes where. Unfortunately, this is an even lengthier process since it essentially means building the ship twice. wall1


I am interested in checking out your unfolds though, I haven't gotten around to putting a lot of those ships in Pep yet.

You have them posted somewhere?

PS. I am not familiar with Trinity. I just got a copy of Blender to do the mapping and export.
 
Trinity is the Eve expansion that along with the usual type of aditions, totally revamped the aging graphics engine, allowing for more detailed ship models and textures. I was looking forward to it before i stopped playing Eve, but have only seen a few screenshots since it was released.

As nice as the new models look, I'd still be happy for a raven from the old outdated engine but I have the same problem when trying to unfold the game models and don't have the patience to teach myself the neccesary steps to clean it up. There's a few tutorials around that can help, one in particular based on Homeworld models I recall seeing a while ago, if I can find a link to it i'll let you know.
