We all know the problem, that we only have a rather shallow depth of field when taking pictures of our models, even when using small apertures. Sometimes, it can be frustrating, if only a small area in your pics is really sharp and all the rest of your model does not show properly. Today I tried the freeware program CombineZ to solve this problem. The results are really convincing. I took the first picture with an aperture of f/18 and focussed on the front of the engine. As you can see, the brown boxcar in the back is not sharp at all. The distance between the engine and the boxcar is about 3 ft. – no chance to get the engine and the boxcar sharp at the same time, even with using the smallest aperture of the camera. Then I took 5 pictures of the scene without changing the position of the camera, focusing on different areas and used the software to combine the five photos. What a difference!

Thats awesome! How hard is the program to use. I know little to nothing about my camera. I do not know about apperatures and what they are, how to change etc., but I think you are the man to go to if I have questions.
Kevin, to create the second picture, I just started the program an loaded the five photos. I didn’t even try to change the settings of the program to improve the result. It was just the first attempt and I liked the result so much, that I wanted to share it here.

Great shots so far guys. I'm figuring out my new (to me) camera so everything seems to have a slight orangsh tint but finally I can do some close-ups:

I agree Kurt! Start this photo thread off any time! :thumb: I'm impressed with the results of your photo program! I am resolved this year to get a better camera but for now will add this point and shoot photo of KP&W units on the high line while a PC Geep rests down below.

i have acquired about 15-20 NEW cars over the last couple months, but only recently have had time to work on them:119: , the first one is a DTI "round top" , the other one isn't anything special, i just liked the big MKT letters on the side:toug: .

Stelco 83 never made it out to the mainline:
But she did get rebuilt. I don't have a picture of her, but she looked something like sister 81 after the loco shop did their thing:
Roller bearings on the trucks, rebuilt traction motors, rebuilt main generator and prime mover, and completely rewired. Many of these locos were later modified for remote control operation, too.

Ralph, I really like that scene. I never noticed the stone work inside the underpass before (can't wait 'till ya get a new camera) and the hill- reminds me of the old neighborhood in Manayunk.

Thanks. The stone work is a relatively recent improvement. One of the helpful things about posting my pictures here is they provide an objective view of my layout and prompt me to want to make improvements.

Here's my shot, although I don't know if I posted this before:
Got the idea from the 5th place winner in an old MR photo contest. Also, I have NO clue how I got 4056's headlight on in this shot, because 4056's headlight doesn't come on when the engine isn't moving, and I have never taken a shot of moving engines, especialy when a moving engine will crah into another train!
Oh BTW, doc, what was Selco 81's final fate? I'm always interestend with engines with bizzare histories...

Kurt, i have the "west-end" to the point i can call it DONE(see first pic below), but i have totally been dragging my feet on the "east-side"ops: . i have two of the East-side buildings CLOSE to being finished, and haven't even started the third:eeki:ops: . Wayne made a comment in a post last week that really hit home with me:winki: , so i have once again started back on my structures, I'll post 'em when i feel there finished:thumb: .
