So, what does your wife think?

I don't know what to vote. I'm too young to be married (14), so I guess I could subsitute 'wife' with my GF or mother. However, my mom is fine with my hobby (I have a sneaking suspision that she's somehow clearing space in the basement at the same time...:eek:), and she is very helpful when I need outside input (she honestly can't tell the difference between my GP9M and my RS-32 aside from the roadnames, so she qualifies as my 'visitor' info source) My GF, however, hasn't ever been over to my house, so she's never seen the trains, plus she calls me crazy mainly because of the hobby, but overall I think she's fine with the hobby.
 
Like CNWman, I am too young to be married. My parents both like my hobby and think it is a good one, but an expensive one too. I have no GF (although there is a girl I want to ask out,:mrgreen: wish me luck) , but I don't like to bring up the modelrailroad, as big and manly as the real things are, I don't like to admit that I still play with what many consider toys,sign1 but expensive toys,...... really really expensive toys.
 
Yesterday my wife arranged her Christmas presents. She found a reversing trolley car set in the hobby shop which we brought home. She also placed an order for Emily (Stirling single with rolling eyes) which they said should be available by Christmas.
Just adding to the previous description.
 
Was at the train show today when the wife walked up to me at one of the tables all she said was I dont wanna know and walked away when I asked her later she said I dont understand you spending all that money on your cho cho trains so I just dont ask.
:cry: I told her I dont understand her getting a new purse every couple of weeks either so we are evin LOL..
 
Hey! this is railroader9731's wife, and I couldn't ask for him to have a better hobby. I say this because I am into Model Railroading too.... that's right a female train NUT.
 
I believe I would have a tough time voting as well. There several factors at play here with a hobby like model railroading. One it takes money, and sometimes lots of it; Two it takes up space; Three it takes time. So....for those of us who are married, money is always an issue, space is a premium (unless you buy a house with a third garage that she does not care about, this is true in my case) and "quality time", every married man knows you have to spend the "time". I have learned to be creative with how I spend my time to diffuse any potential outbursts, arguments or snide comments when it comes to model railroading. It generally makes life much more pleasurable and this way when its "my time", the interference is not welcome unless its an emergency. My wife has hobbies as well, most include watching TV, decorating way to much at holidays and scrapbooking. There is always a give and take.

So I guess for the young ones, stay in school, get a good degree, make the money to buy the space and invest the time in your relationship so that your hobby is not an interference.

I'm the next step: she doesn't have anything to do with model railroading, but I've done nearly a dozen quilts since I got started in "her" hobby 18 months ago. Not bad for a guy who had never used a sewing machine before in his life. I go to quilt classes with her, although we do quite different types of quilts, use very different fabrics, etc., so she doesn't say a word when I announce "it's train time".
 
Three years ago my wife tugs on my shoulder while we're watching TV and says 'wanna goto the Model Railroad show at the Mayfield this weekend' I turned, eyes wide and responded with 'I love you so much right now'

She noticed I had a few HO items back at my parents house and quized me on them when we first started dating, but for me that was a long time ago (about a decade) and wasn't something I was into anymore. Still loved trains.

Then last christmas she buys me a Model Power desiel freight set... this year for my birthday she bought me a Model Power Pacific, and a few freight cars.

This Christmas she wants to spend our week off together by cleaning out the spare bedroom so we can make room for a layout.

So really, she's the one getting me back into the hobby, and I've really fallen in love with it all over again. I have even watched her on ebay trying to find items that I mention I would like. And found an HO Model of the CNR 6060 Mountain loco.

All my wife wants to do is watch and play engineer sometimes tho, maybe help with building construction when it comes time... she wants me to do all the work. :P

My wife does her arts and crafts, I do my model railroading and scale model building (currently working on a 1/72 scale Gato-class WW II submarine) and we each support the other in what we do.

Watch out Loren, everytime my wife gives me any $$$, there's usually a catch :twisted:....If she gives me $20, then there is another $40 somewhere in HER purse!! sign1
