Prescott train show

Hey, just in case anyone is interested, there's a train show/swap meet up in Prescott on Saturday, Aug 18th. I think it's in the same place it has been the past few years, right at that old church on Gurly St.

Anyway, I'm planning on going up there, and I'm hoping that TrainNut and Woodone will be able to make it so we can go as a group.

Ray Marinaccio says he'll be there, so I'm looking forward to going to see what surprises he has in store.:thumb::thumb: Let's see how many we can get from the Phoenix area to go... It's a nice ride up there:mrgreen:

The Wright Institute is just east of Scottsdale. Prescott is about a two-hour drive north of the Phoenix area. There is not web site that I know of, but perhaps Ray knows of one since it's his group that is sponsoring it.

If you're looking for places to check out, you might want to go to the McCormick RR park on Scottsdale Rd. There's trains and a model train shop there. There's several shops dedicated to train, one in Mesa on Country Club Dr. north of US60 and one in Phoenix, off of I-17 on Bethany Home Rd.

Let us know what you have time to do, and we can give you a bit more information as to where to go.

Hope to see you all. The swap meet starts at 9 AM and goes until 1 PM. After the show there will be open house layout tours at a few of the members homes.
Our N scale group will have our modular layout and a few other displays set up at the show.
Some of the members will be running large scale trains at the show also.
My son and I will be helping out with the N scale displays and searching the swap meet for bargains.
We plan to start running the modular layout at 8 AM for people waiting for the swap meet to start.

That's great, it gives us a reason to come a bit early. So far as I know, TrainNut and Woodone and myself will be there. I'm assuming that the layouts will be set up in those separate rooms like last year.

Yes, We get that same room.
I think it's nice to be able to set up where people don't have to pay to see the trains run.
We also get to set up the day before and then lock the room until the day of the show. That makes it a whole lot easier.
I'm planning to bring my small N scale layout for the youngins' to play with and at least one section of the 4 piece N scale layout.
We've done a lot of work to the Modular layout since the last show.
Some of the modules were completely stripped and rebuilt and some had minor reworking of the scenery.
I added some flashing crossing signals, a blinking traffic light and a school buss with flashing warning lights(I still have to work a few bugs out of that one)
We may have a small HO timesaver switching layout set up for people to operate also.

Oh yea,
One of the N scale members will have a table set up at the swap meet with some of his and the clubs excess N scale inventory.
If there is anything specific any of you are looking for, let me know ahead of time and I may be able to set it aside (or find it) for you.

The first time I ever went to this show I was very new to the hobby (like one engine and no layout yet) and didn't know brass from nickel-silver. I got taken on a box-lot of stuff and a few locos that I bought.:curse: :curse: I've been looking for those guys that took advantage of me ever since.:cry: :cry: I got even last year when I picked up all those F7's and a few other bargains that Ray and his son didn't find first.:twisted: :twisted: I even enjoyed stripping them down and rebuilding them all.:thumb: :thumb:

Well, Tony has one advantage over us all, he can still crawl under those tables and find things that no one else can. :mrgreen: I wouldn't be able to do that even if I saw a box marked, "free"...

Ray's club had their N scale modular layout, plus two more N scale layouts. One of which was part of the larger layout that I was able to give to Ray for restoration. Great job to see that it was cleaned up and running. For those of you who aren't aware, this was a layout that I got after it was set up in a Phoenix garage, and probably hadn't been run in over fifteen years. A worthwhile project left in worthwhile hands.

As far as it being worth the trip, yeah. Wooden picked me up at 5:30 in the morning. We stopped in Wickenburg for breakfast and made it to the show before 8:30. Excellent time and a nice trip. I thank Woodone for doing the driving, my right arm and shoulder are recuperating from a fall and I couldn't have gone up there if I had to drive.

As Ray says, there was a great turnout, and lots of stuff to see and to buy. There wasn't much in N scale, except for one guy that had a table full of N scale and it was like a feeding frenzy. There were two boxes full of goodies, all for 25 cents an item, 10 for $2. He had MT cars going from $1 each to $4, cheaper than you can buy the trucks alone. Here's two shots of things I bough, all sorts of accessories, people, animals, fences, vehicles, signal bridges and sheesh, I don't know what else. Got an MT snow plow kit and a caboose kit for a dollar each, and three MT undecorated car kits for $2 each. The three MT trailer carriers were the most I paid for anything at $4 each. Most everything he was selling was new.

I found a $10 box lot with a few things I have been looking for.
The best thing I found was an A-B-A set of HO Train Miniature Alcos for $40.
My wife got a Spectrum E33 for $40.

No problem Don, I am glad to have made the trip with you. We had great vist on the way up and back. Some new scenery to see (for me at least) on the trip too.

Oh, one other thing, anyone (TrainNut) going to Prescott the back way and still goes up that winding hill needs to think about it, more than just twice. We went up Yarnell Hill, then cut over through Kirkand and Skull Valley. It looks longer on the map and Yahoo says it is a bit longer, but I'll bet we saved a good half-hour each way. :thumb: There was no traffic, no winding cutbacks or long climbs. No crawling at about 20 mph behind an RV or truck waiting for a passing zone. wall1 wall1 Just a gentle climb all the way. It seems that just a few minutes after we left Skull Valley we were passing by Highland Pines. Ask Woodone, I couldn't stop talking about how fast we got there and how easy the drive was.

During the summer, I would ride my motorcycle down to Wilhoit and back, sometimes every night. I love that stretch of road. My grandfather lives in Skull Valley and it was also not uncommon for me to take the long way down there (from Prescott to Skull Valley) by going down 89A and up through Kirkland to Skull Valley. It took a lot longer that way but it sure was fun. I guess for me, the adventure is in the journey as well as the destination. Not too long ago, they completely repaved and widened a major portion of the Spars and added several new passing bays making it easier to pass. Each to his own. By the way, I recommended on your trip to Durango, that you take the drive over to Ouray for the day. If you don't like this stretch of 89A, don't go to Ouray. It's beautiful but curvy as all get out.

We had a cabin up in Highland Pine for about ten years. We sold it ten years ago, but we always used I17 to get there then. I admit, White Spar Rd. is a pretty drive, as is 89A. When you get to be our age, you try to take the fastest, least bothersome route.

By the way, I recommended on your trip to Durango, that you take the drive over to Ouray for the day. If you don't like this stretch of 89A, don't go to Ouray. It's beautiful but curvy as all get out.

My son said he drove that and he thought that some of the curves marked 25 mph where rated as being too fast. He said he'd never drive it again.:cry: :cry:
