Might help to explain what we're looking at in case any of the 863 members that aren't you or I and have never been to Marion click on this thread.
What can I say..Its where the NS rolls through Marion and crosses CSX Indianapolis Line..On the West side of the old Marion Station is CSX's Columbus sub division.West of the Station you will find CSX's Marion yard.

I will add Marion isn't as busy as it was before the CR break up but,it still puts on a good show.
And I'll add that NS operates a former N&W, originally PRR, line from Columbus to Sandusky that produces half of the traffic through town. The rest of the traffic is split between two CSX lines, the former C&O from Columbus to Toledo and the former Conrail, previously NYC, from Cleveland to St. Louis. AC tower, which formerly controlled the interlocking plant, has been restored and provides a photo platform, as seen in the photos.
I'll also add that on two weeks, on the evening of May 19th, I'll be in Marion doing a slide presentation of my 2006 photography.

Doesn't the old Erie run through Marion as well? It seems to me it runs right behind the building that houses the model railroad club.
Stream of thought comment - west of town (Marion), there is a concrete coal tipple still standing astride the the old Erie's mainline. I'll have to get a photo of that - I'm sure they exist all over the country, but I only know of two, and one of those is standing in an abondoned yard in Nelsonville Ohio, in what used to be the Hocking Valley, then later the C&O line from Columbus to Athens. Sorry for the off topic!
The Erie operated the track on the north side of the station jointly with the New York Central. The joint operation extended from Marion as far east as Galion, and the track is intact out to that point, but only as Conrail kept it as double track on their ex-NYC route. Most of the rest of the EL is abandoned from Mansfield west to Chicago and from Ashland east to near Meadville, with only a few small segments still in service to serve local industries from other lines; Conrail pulled it up by the early 1980s. I did not include the EL in my original post because as an abandoned line it doesn't contribute in the way of traffic to the modern scene in Marion. (Though I'm sure someone will try to argue with me over that since a portion of the line still sees traffic, even though it's routed onto that from the former NYC line.)
The coaling tower is north of town on the NS's former PRR line. It sits just south of the Route 23 overpass.
