My 1st Model!

Well, after spending some time perusing the Threads, reading and practicing a LOT,
I decided to dive in and try a Model... it's the Hudson Class Runabout USS Packard.

I noticed that there are parts (2A-C), that are splitting images of what's printed on the Model; I take it these are 'greebles', or Layering to add Texture... sort of like Verlinden for Paper?

Wow, that looks very good! I guess you are right, the parts seem to be relief parts. :)
 
Everywhere there's a printed Texture, except for Windows and the Doors! I realized that the greebles make the Model 'pop' and give it more Depth! Also, using CA on the Tabs definitely lowers the stress factor when building; just a drop spread thin does the trick!

This looks fabulous! This model can be greebled out extensively. :)
 
Try to get into making your own tabs, and cutting any tabs that came with the model. This will allow the edges to line up perfectly, and you can glue pone side of the tab in first, using a piece of stock paper to make sure it is set back exactly the right amount.

I also would recommend ZIP DRY or UHU Glue (Micheal's Craft Stores has these, if you are in the U.S.). If you are using a Cyanoacrylate, will become very sick from it. There is no way around that, as the effect is accumulative. The two glues have a longer set up time, allowing for adjustment, and are non toxic. It would be horrible to get sick from a hobby you have just found. Crazy Glue has it uses, but with paper models, it should be used sparingly if at all. Especially with the U.V. activated glue pens readily available.

Your model came out great. It's nice to know that you can continue, stop, go back to it, or leave it as it is. One of the great things about paper modeling. :)
 
Be careful where you place it. I was looking at one of my early models (playing with it) and left it on the sofa. It met it's doom when a light sheet had somehow been thrown over it and my wife crushed it back into flat paper as she sat on it. :)

Yes you will find that if designers are consistent that any part that has a, b etc after it somehow glues to the corresponding numbered part...and it is always nice to have good directions ( though not always the case )! Like you say " just about every where there is a texture you can Greeble!! but don't discount windows and doors! with some more under your belt, you could add an interior one day!! and to paraphrase Zathros adding my own 2 cents..If you are not adding wire/plastic/leather beefing up parts for hinges of that will take stress for some reason or have to be drilled for holes etc....stay away from CA glue... there really is no need for it..and as time goes by the others such as Zathros mentioned, are far superior for the purpose. When you get into complicated stuff you are GOING to WANT a slower grab and Set time on your seams!! Trust Us!!

My next suggestion? 1) I would suggest adding a layer of .5mm card ( poster board thickness ) to the inside of this version ( it doesn't call for it, but you can drastically strengthen your model as well as learn how to do it on something you already have put together once!) or
2) Upgrade to something like the Danube Class

I think you're off to a fine start in a fabulous hobby with some of the most helpful people in the world (literally).

There are quite a few shuttle models out there. even the shuttle used in Firefly, and it is extremely detailed. You can get an excellent model that has a full interior. It's quite a model. ;)
