Converting a John Armstrong Plan

I just finished reading 18 Tailor-Made Model Railroad Track Plans by John Armstrong. There are two plans in there I really like, and might want to follow. The problem I have is that they do not give you a parts list or a good explanation of what some of the notations on the plans mean.

I'm trying to figure out how to convert one of these into my own plan. Has anyone ever done anything like this?
