The reported demise of railroad industry

I never fully understood the decline of the railroad in the first place. They have so much in their favor for bulk shipping. There must have been major issues with planning and marketing. One train with 3 employees can easily carry the cargo of 200 freight trucks. It would consume less fuel...

The reported demise of railroad industry

"An interesting journey into information." That would be an awesome tag line for an alternative data/information website, something like Wikipedia.

    Let's Talk Couplers

I used a coupler converter car when I was moving from hornhooks to kadees on my HO layout. I think this is fairly common practice. Also, it makes it easier to mix rolling stock with a friend's layout if he doesn't use your chosen coupler type (:

    Kitchen Layout

There isn't enough voltage in model trains to fry anything ;) Judging by the real trolleys in the town where I work the grooves between the rails and the asphalt get pretty full of clutter - pet fur and food crumbs would fill the crack of an O or G scale trolley and be difficult to clean...

    What kind of Engines?

I wasn't even trying to identify it as a model of a real engine - I was just trying to find what Bachmann product it was. Check the fuel tank on the two. The Spectrum F7 is silver with three clasps and the standard F9 is black with one clasp.

    Does this make sense?

I'd put the intermodal and refinery on the same side and the passengers on the other.

Oh my ... http://www.cincinnatirailway.com/vistadome.php ... I could live in that. Seriously.

    Caboose sighting

I think it would be pretty cool to own a caboose and turn it into semi-permanent living quarters. I hear the major railroads will stick a personal car on the end of a train for a fee. A great way to see the countryside.

    What kind of Engines?

The one in the set is an F9 - I would tend to agree with you.

    What kind of Engines?

That doesn't look like the Spectrum model to me. Likely the standard - here it is in a set http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/catalog/?function=detail&id=26 The Northern is also in a set http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/catalog/?function=detail&id=27

    Let's Talk Couplers

There are different brands because there are different demands from the modelers. The reason there are so many styles is because of the different cars they're attached to. If the distance from the truck bolster to the couple box is long, the length of the arm from the coupler box to the coupler...

Sittin downtown at a railway station,

Every time I see the gray and yellow L & N it reminds me of that massive college layout that was featured in MR years ago. I couldn't tell you which college, or what year the article was published, but it was an amazing setup. Good shots - really good modeling.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwNulZLSFnI&mode=related&search= Ho-ly-cow! Though I think it's actually a bit too powerful. Slings that snow a scale quarter mile it looks like ;)

    Most powerful engine?

The phrase "freight cars pulled" is rather vague. That could be anything from empty 30' flat cars up to fully loaded 80' box cars. It could be as much as 10x the weight per car. I think "fright cars pulled" should be replaced by tow-bar strength (:

    Foam, Cork, & Track

One thing I read a while back and successfully put to use was to pre-solder together pairs of flex track with the slip rail on the same side before you put them into place, making 6' sections instead of 3' sections. That way you get at least a few joints that are really well done (:

    Michigan's Largest O Scale Layout

Fifteen years ago I thought HO scale was a no-brainer; why would anyone choose anything else? But recently I've seen the beauty in O scale. You don't have to have countless scale miles of track and endless yards full of cars to have a great layout. O scale is so pretty to look at - even a single...
