    Scrap yard

Here's a stellar example of a major scrapyard, along with a metal shredder/ferrous materials sorter. http://maps.live.com/?v=2&encType=1&sp=Point.q8zk6v4t93f8_Union%20Machine%20Works____~Point.q8zfg84t888b_Scrap%20Yard%20Car%20crusher____ Included in the links is also a cool Machine Works...

    1880's paycar

Very nice, and it's nice to see you working on this stuff again! The roof is a masterpiece. Did you scratchbuild the oval nameplate? It may just be my computer, but it looks lop-sided.

    My revised scenery thread

Cool! How you make that gray/brown hill is basically this: 1. Paint the silhouette of the hill a medium grayish brown 2. Using a long, flat, stiff bristle brush take some regular brown and jab the hill in the areas where there are dark brown tree twigs, holding the brush upside down at a...

    My revised scenery thread

Here are some taller hills for reference for the other side of your backdrop: (Also check out that cool DMIR signal bridge, that might make an awesome scratchbuilding project!) http://duluthsuperior.railfan.net/images/sPCE_2.jpg You got the trees 100% correct, judging by this photo...

    My revised scenery thread

True enough, it's nice to see some really low hills like those found in Minnesota and Wisconsin. It definately fits your theme, as you're modeling the upper plains, not the rockies! :) You did a perfect job then. I'm just so used to the higher hills (1500-2000ft) around here. Like in this...

Looks good enough, but remember hillsides get bluer the farther they are away from the viewer: http://www.artisticdesantafe.com/1353jc_Distant_Hills_35x26.jpg/1353jc_Distant_Hills_35x26-full;init:.jpg The trees on the backdrop do indded add depth to the birches in the foreground, good job...

A Money Making Idea That Keeps Popping Into My Head

Not just insurance, it's going to be a huge money-pit. It's not worth your time or effort. Plus they look like terribly fake looking. The only thing "train" about them is that there's more than one trailer pulled by a tractor, a roadtrain if you will. Somewhat like the semi-trucks in Australia...

Yeah, I never figured out how the fur worked either, (I wrote that suggestion as I was trying it out for the first time) I tried the dye as well, and it was completely unsuccessful. I supppose you have to just buy brownish green fur and cut to size and shapes you want. The Pot toppers look...

Go KEVIN! :) This is awesome, thanks for picking up the ball and really making your layout look exceptional! BTW, a cheap way to make pastures can be found in the florist section of Michael's Craft store, they're called "Pot Toppers" and they're made from the same material as the Silflor...

Kevin, good idea with both the static grass machine and pulpwood load. I know Dr. Wayne posted an in-depth how to on how to make one of these fantastic gizmos here on this forum. Hmm..Birch trees. I know you'll need a lot of them..let me give that some thought. What I can think of how would...

    Missabe layout progress

Kevin, That's looking much better, the bridge track makes it look 100% more realistic. That pulpwood looks a bit too large for HO. Go with smaller twigs, but you're certianly on the right track. Did you kitbash the pulpwood gon? It's awesome. Here's more scale pulpwood...

    G.E.C's layout pictures

I also use #4's for staging, and they work jus fine, but you need to leave larger "fouling areas" (less overall cars in the yard, one per track) than a #6 or #8, but I agree they work great.
