HO operation on a car battery.

Well if your throttles work from 110volts then you just plug them into the inverter socket and you don't have to modify anything, just use normal controllers like everyone else. A point to keep in mind while operating off a battery, a short circuit, if a lead doesn't melt a battery could...

HO operation on a car battery.

I don't know but I'd use one of those small inverters 100 Watt or so, inverters 12VDC to 120AC, you can get them at any of the big retail stores in the automotive or marine section. Then just use your normal controllers. Seems safer and easier to me. Willis

    Making Trees

Hi Railer, pretty nifty tree. One look at my layout and you'll see I could use a lot of them. Can you give us a few particulars on how it was made and the materials you used. Willis

    A sad and Bad Week

Hi Andy, sorry about your breakup, but things usually happen for a reason. Please don't get hung up looking for a woman who likes trains, I assure it's not necessary all that is necessary is mutual respect for one and other. I really don't know what my wife actually thinks of trains, but I do...

    Plaster Mixture

For rockwork I use the POP for strength, cleaner and crisper edges. The Joint compound even when dry (takes a long time) is not all that strong by itself and the rocks come out of the mold with bubble holes and rounded edges, and to top it off it doesnt take stain (water diluted colors) very...

    Mikado conversion

Hi Val, and thank you for the link. At $150 for four sets of 720 number plates each I'd say it's a pretty good buy and worth investing. Definately worth it. Thanks Cheers Willis

    Mikado conversion

Hi Val, I doubt I'll ever cease to be amazed by your work, another excellent job you can be proud of. Maybe I shouldn't have come to the Gauge, because now I'm getting a hankering to rework some of the old Bachmanns I have downstairs :D , well even if they don't run great they'll make great show...

    Plaster Mixture

Lynn here's my method for what it's worth. Instead of paper I use the square gauze patches, you get them in packages diabetic supplys for needles. Instead of POP I use a bucket of mud, the type used for drywall crack filling ect. I lay out a square of gauze, moisten it with a spray bottle and...

So, what does your wife think?

Hi cabdriver and thanks. Yes it's a great relationship, we've been married 41 years and retired now. I have a digital camera so I can take a shot of a questionable area come right up put it on the screen and get her opinion. She's my greatest supporter, I only wish she could navigate the stairs...

So, what does your wife think?

Well for me, the situation is quite similar to Don (EZ) Day. My wife used to help, in fact was a member of the MR club when it existed. She no longer can get down stairs to the train room because of the toll multiple sclerosis has taken from her agility, but I take photos of what I'm doing on...

    Wiring Switch Machines questions

Hi dturnerfish, well it all depends on exactly what you want to do. On my layout I use power routing. I press one button and all switches and track power are set to the route I want the train to go. Issues power supply for the switches must be capable of throwing the maximum number of...

    Expanded Foam or Newspaper?

Staying away from expanded foam is the thing to do. If I recall they seopped using it as flotation for boats something about gas and deterioration. All I seem to recall is it's bad stuff in enclosed areas. It's been a long time, sorry I've forgotten the whole story. For my self, like previous...

    I've been published

Hi Andrew, I'd like to add my congratulations. Echoing Val's post I'd like to see more photos also. The little bit of a glimpse into the interior, (photo in newsletter) shows just a little of the intricate detailing you've done with it. Some photo's of the scratch built details and a little...

What do you do day-to-day on your layout??

When I started to build my layout I had a much different perspective of what a model railroad should look like. Since I started to visit the forums see what others have done, accept their ideas and advice, my main day to day work is changing the cookie cutter structure of the layout from the toy...

How many actully run there trains?

At this time rarely, except for testing trackage or a loco itself. I guess I get my kicks out of building things for now. The layout is such a long way from being finished that I concentrate my efforts there for now. However I do look forward to the day when I'll be setting up an operational...

    John Allen Viaduct Liner

Yes the liners are from Woodland Scenics, and I have used them. However the surface has a sort of a stippled effect like it was chipped out of rock. They work quite well but I have no idea of how you would get a brick and mortar effect without carving one. Using a liner mold to make the liner...
