    Diorama Photos

Thanks for all the nice comments folks! I used the mechanism from an N scale Life-Like 0-6-0T… Some of it is WS field grass, & I also used some jute rope (bailing twine) to make tall grass… Hiya Don! Goo9d to hear from you too, old friend! [FONT=Times New Roman][SIZE=3]I...

    MDC/Roundhouse Ore Car Detailing

Sorry for the reply being so late…I haven’t stopped in here at The Gauge for a while… I’m at work at the moment, so I don’t have any pictures on hand, but I will see if I can dig some up at home… You’re right…the Kdees probably do add some weight, but those cars were not really short on that to...

    Appalachian WV NG logging?

Copper? Ooohhh...I think there is the word "coppermine" in the web address...??? It doesn't pertain to the layout... (although there was copper mining done in TN through the 50's - 60's along the old K&A division of the L&N RR...) My HOn30 layout was strictly a timber operation...At one time I...

    Appalachian WV NG logging?

These were some pics I posted to the photography forum… http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161934 These aren’t from the layout (it no longer exists) but are from a diorama I built a few months ago…

    MDC/Roundhouse Ore Car Detailing

I bashed some of these cars into 13’ On30 hoppers…I won’t get into that as that’s not really what you’re asking about… That said, one of the best improvements IMHO, was to replace the wheels & trucks with Kadee archbars…it makes a huge difference!

    Appalachian WV NG logging?

I haven’t stopped in for a while, so sorry I’m a bit late in replying to this thread… While I don’t model any WV narrow gauge prototypes, I do model Appalachian settings…I’ve done this in N, HO, & I built a small free lance logging layout in Hon30… I grew up in KY, & have spent a lot of time...

    McCabe Sawmill, Pump House

I’ve been looking at your other threads in this forum as well, & this is some really fine modeling Willy! I’m always watching for good examples of sawmills, since eventually, I’ll be needing one for my HO layout (under construction) I’m going to have to scratchbuild mine, compressing it into...

    Diorama Photos

Here are a couple of shots of an Hon30 diorama I built a few months back… I took these pictures outdoors…one in direct sun, the other in shade…

    More ballasting Q's

I quit using water as a wetting agent for my ballast... I use rubbing alcohol with a small amout of black ink in it...(a thin black wash) This kind of "kills two birds with one stone" if you will...it not only works well as a wetting agent, but it also adds a little weathering to the ballast...a...

    ? on truss/ girder bridges

I'd like to know if you're still able to get Central Valley stuff? I wasn't aware they were still around...??? I've got a couple of their old box-girder sets, & I've been hoarding them like gold!

    Mountain Structure??

I’m thinking Cheetah20 meant 8 inches instead of feet…based on the fact that he’s modeling in N scale, & that he indicated “8 – 14””… I’ve made mountains using a couple of the techniques mentioned here…stacked foam boards, plaster-soaked paper towels, screen wire, wadded up newspaper, cardboard...

    So what is "narrow?"

For students of the American Civil War, & RR history from that period, it’s a fairly well-accepted fact that one of the detrements to the Confederate supply lines, & later to the Federals occupying the south, were the dizzying array of RR gauges throughout the region… Transfers had to constantly...

Starting Over With An HO Layout

Just an update... I've been kind of busy with another non-RR project, & we've got a big family vacation coming up in a few weeks...time & money...the old story... Anyway, I have still been puttering along with the sub-roadbed... This area will represent a coal mine, small mining town, & possibly...
